Ollice and Shop in M » building, Ri< innoml btre t THE EVENING POST: WEDNESDAY, JOLY 9, 1890. Wasteful Advertisii?.’;-. Discriminating merchants long ago abandoned the circular and gutter snipe methods of advertising. for the amount of hard cash it takes to fairly circulate 5,000 hand bills you can place an attractive ad. in a reputable and well circulated newspaper in a way to bring many times the returns that can possibly come from the older and nearly obsolete method of an nouncement. People buy a newspaper to read it; they do not buy or want the gutter snipe, and-they don’t read it. Not one person in ten ever glances at the dodger that is thrust in his hand at the street corner before he consigns it to the gutter, lie only consents to re ceive it at all out of sympathy for the poor fellow who is making a more or less honest effort to get rid of his armful of bills; and the one fellow in ten who does look at the dodger first sweeps the horizon with his weather eye to see that no one observes him reading the affair! An announcement read in this way —or not at all—isn’t going to startle any one by the mag nitude of the returns. The X.iluial Advertising !Mediiun. The local weekly is the natural me dium for reaching the vast number of ■ | people who live in the small towns ? and villages. Advertisers who wish to reach this class of, people should not make the mistake of supposing that the ground is thoroughly covered by the big daily and weekly publications of the, cities. While it is true that the metropolitan dailies are being more generally taken than formerly among country people, it is also true that they ‘ do not receive the careful reading that I is accorded the home paper. The latter ? is in some respects like a letter. It gives the small and insigidieunt items of news, which are sometimes made the subject of ridicule, but which are just what the people want. Where the t daily will be skimmed over in a half , liourand tossed aside, the local weekly will be. passed from one member of the I family to the other and be eagerly read Iby each. The city daily is id< n by tiie storekc' iH-r, the lawyer mid the diM-tor, perhaps, but all the other p«o ph- in the place take the local pajs r. - I’riiiti-r’s Ink. Lively Advertlslnj{.
