THE EVENING POST: SAURDAY, JULY 12. 1890. First Observatories. The first recorded observatory was on the top of the Temple of Bolus; the tomb of Osymandias, in Egypt, was another. It contained a golden astro nomical circle 200 feet in diameter. Another at Benares, India, is supposed to be at least as ancient as either of the two others. The first in Europe was erected at Cassel, in 1561; that of Tycho Brahe, at Uraniaburg, was built in 1576. The Paris observatory dates from 1667, and that of Green wich from 1675. The Nuremberg ob servatory was erected in 1678. and that of Berlin in 1711. The famous Bologna tower was built three years later, that at Pisa following next, in 1730. Stock holm, Utrecht. An Enormous Chain* The big chain that was used in rais ing the steamer Armstrong was made by the British government for the pur pose of blockading the harbor in the Crimean war. It was sent out to Que bec by the British admiralty, many years ago, to be sold for what it would bring. Some idea of its size and strength may be conveyed by the fact that each link of this great chain weighs 68 pounds, and is supposed to have a breakage capacity of 125 tons. —Exchange. The Only Way.
