A TWO SIDED BILL. It Created a Tr.-iiH-ik’ouH Sansation in the Treasury department. Then* was received at the treasury department on<- of the most peculiar bank notes overs' namong the millions upon millions of •.•hit -ncy notes printed by the government. it was a §2O note or a §lO not“, just according to which I side was up, for by some remarkable mistake the one side was printed with the figures and devices cf >a>§2o bill. , while the other had all the figures and devices of a §lO bill. The not'; was returned to the treas ( nry by ashler of the First Wash- I ington National bank of Jersey City, who sent it v. ithnrath r sarcastic laite. intimating that his bank was not going into the freak ba- in - ~ and added that as the treasury had counted that bill for §2O lie would trouble them to send . , him an ordinary §2O note. The affair > I created a sensation, for no one had ever I seen such a wonderful note before. I The matter was referred to the depart ment of issue, from which the note had been sent out to th;.* Jers y City bank. < The mistake was promptly corrected and an immediate hives'.igation begun. The investigation was prosecuted with vigor, and Gen. Meredith found the cause of the trouble. It seems that the tour notes printed on a sheet are not all of one denomination. There are always three of one kind and the 1 fourth of another; thus, in this case, three tens and a twenty. It was an easy task to learn just when this bun I die had been printed, and by which plate printers. They were examined, and it developed that one sheet of lorn notes, after having been printed on one side, had fallen olf the bundle to the lloor. The assistant who picked it up by some unfortunate oversight turned the sheet upside down wlicn she placed it on the bundle. The rest is easily understood. This sheet was printed on the second side with a2J face on the r verse of a ten, and one of the three 10 face on the re verse of the one 2'l of the st. el. lienee ' (here were two - ‘lO 20s” in the lot. ( Thus the mistake was correct I. But no good explanation was offered, or can I bo offered, why these two bills, passing ! ; through a score of hands, each one of . whom is supposed to examine every bill ■ most carefully, should not have been discovered. Every person in the bureau who handles a note is held responsible in the strictest way. and ft is almost in credible that none of these jwople should have discovered the mistake. In the department ot issuo are not less than six counters, whose business it has keen for years to count the notes be : fore issuing them to the banks. They ar • considered the most expert counters 1 in the world, and yet all six of these i wonderful experts allowed such a bill to pass through their hands. No trace has been found of the second hybrid, i so that it must be wandering around I the country. The two notes will lie 1 kept in the treasurer's office as curios | ities.—Baltimore Sun. Experiment with Hopes and Wires. Some interesting experiments have been made by a French engineer to as certain definitely the strength, extern i | bility and elasticity of round and Hat i ropes of hemp and aloe, and of iron ■ and steel wire. In these investigations : there were employed a horizontal by I draulic press and weighing apparatus consisting of a steel yard and sliding weight by which tension of 130,000 |M>unds could be recorded, and for i higher pressures a gauge on the body i of the press was used. Specimens were | fastened by winding each end on a ■ grooved pulley of special construction, the usual length of the specimens being thirteen feet. The result of all the tests gave for 1 ! the average tensile strengths of ropes tho following: White hemp, 10,500 to I 11,200 pounds per square inch; tarred hemp, 7,700 to 8,400; white manila, 9,800 to 10,1100; white aloes, 5,600 to I 7,000; flat tarred, hemp and manila, j 7.800 to 8,100. A factor of safety of ; four, or even three in some cases, is I considered a safe rope. A rope of un annealcil wire has an ultimate strength of about 55,000 pounds per square inch of section of metal. When annealed tho ultimate strength is reduced to about 15.000 pounds; but tho elonga- I tion is nearly doubled, being nearly 1? to 15 percent, in annealed wire. The I best wire ropes for mining purposes have a Hiiii'li higher teusile strength. New York T< legrain. Equal to the Occasion.
