New Coal Mines in Alabama.
The Sloss Iron and Steel Company
is opening coal mines at Cardiff,
about twenty miles west of Birming- 1
ham, and the Georgia Pacific rail !
road is putting in new tracks at the '
mines. The Birmingham Evening
I New; says a town is to be built!
there, and it is expected that by the
fall these mines will have an output;
of 70J tons daily.
Snakes Bite Under Water.
Mr. George Hardwick, of Russell
county, Ala., was bitten twice in the:
■ leg by a water moccasin, while he!
was bathiug in a ereek on Saturd iv I
This seems to contradict tin
assJrsion that snakes will not bite
under water. Mr. 11. was made crit

New Mexican Irrigation.
There are seven ditches being con
struetei 1 in Mexico, which whin
completed, will irrigate 720,000!
acres, more than 1100 square miles.
This is almost 100,000 acres more!
than the land now subject to irriga- j
tion in that territory.
L
More Census Deficiencies.
A Raleigh, dispatch asserts that no
census of South Greensboro,Guilford
| county, N. C.. which has a popula- I
| tion of three thousand, has been tak
len, and one township in the county !
has had no enumerator. There are!
similar complaints from that whole J
I eeueus district.
Crops in Louisiana.
The Times-Detnucrat reports the
crops small and late in all the over-!
; flowed parishes, but says: "Taking!
I all points into consideration, the |
■ crop conditions are favorable, better j
than last year, and, with few exeep- j
> tions, cotton, corn and cane are
a head of July, 1889.” .1
