The didn nil no growing out of the Ats-.s, .a of the supreme court in ; «h*t is knewtt as the “Original Package” case have Iwen overcome. «s it wrcwis pv. baldc, by an enabling ad « hich has passed the lower house ' oi congress, and which will, doubt ess, ts-c nt'e a law. The trouble; ar.-isr ;a the stale of lowa, a prohibi ; inn sLatc. where the attempt was made io im|<ort liquors for sale, the i « a m being made that the state h.w n force was in contravention of the of the constitution which . .a.-an U-es freedom of trade between . v states. The case being carried to the supreme court, it was held that the prohibition law was uncos slAulional, in so far as it prevented the importation of liquors in original and unbroken packages. The bill whith has passed liiv h msc seems to have met the issue. Its design is to reconcile the consti tutional provision in regard to ti e restrictions of interstate eorrmercc with the doctrine of the right of a state to regulate Its internal affairs. The decision of the supreme court had been so fundtyuental in its eliai acter and so widespread in its gen eralizations as to lead to the logical von elusion that the right existed to one state to utterly prohibit all com uiciec witli another slate. These commercial heresies will' How Lave been exploded by the; enactment of this law, whilst the an tor.omy of the state itself is pre sei veil, and a restricted liberty is, ail irded it of regulating its own as fairs. The bill provides that when ever any article of commerce is im pil led into any slate and there of feted for sale, it shall be subject to the laws of that state. But the stale is denied the right to discriminate in favor of its own citizens, or against the itizens of another stale, in respect to the sale of any article, of commerce. Nor is a state allowed to discriminate in favor of its jwn products and against the products' of another state. All of which simply means,* that if the state of lowa choses to deny 1 to her own citizens the privilege of selling liquor within her own bor 1 ders, no one else may insist upon that right. But it also means that if the state of Georgia permits her own citizens lo sell coal or any other commodity, within our own borders, she cannot deny the same right to a citizen of Alabama or any other state. ( axkiuate Spi:aiis has said to the democratic executive committee of this county, that he is a prohibition ist, and nothing else in polities. This means that, if he is sent to the legislature, and the question arises, he will vote to close up our hand some brewery,as well as end the sale of spirits in this county. Do laboring men. who like the r harmless glu-s of beer, endorse such an idea as this? I'he prohibition parly is secretly oi ganiziug throughout the state, and is attempting to slip in as many of tlnir men as possible, under the dis guise of Democrats. Should they succeed in making a respecluble showing in the legislat ire, they will lake advantage of the disorganize 1 condition of the democracy in this state to force through the legislature some measures which the people will not relish. The people of the south are only beginning to realize the Hangers in I volved in the passage of the force bill. Since the first gun wai? fired at Sumter, there has been scarcely such a sensation as has been created by the proposition to resort to the the boycott byway of a menace to the passage of this bill. The entire country is aroused and expressions of opinion are pouring in from ail hands favoring the adoption of such a measuic. Should it be carried in to effect, it would be the most stu peudous event of alt the ages. Our board ol' trade should take the mat ter in haud at mice, and join the other cities of the south in vtiicing the protest of Brunswick at the cn actmenk of a law which, at one blow, will revolutionize the institutions of our county . The Western Union Telegraph Company should use every precau tion to secure the use ol a building ■ that is entirely fireproof. At the re ’ cent lire which demolished its sumpt uous olliccs. the strange spectacle ; was observed of the firemen water ing Western I nion.
