Living r a bi* king the entrance to the I ited States Senate, is in painful .mlrast to the smiling countenance r ol the Hon. Thomas Lamb ot'Glyrn county, who meets no obstacles in his easy road to a scat in the state senate. In some of the states of the union it is a penal offense to counterfeit the button of the grand army of the republic. There is mourning in the camp of the veterans, because of the discovery that the button is. never theless, being counterfeited in other states, and the demand is made for the enactment of a national law to protect it. It is a nice condition of affairs in this country, when a man must be known by his buttons, instead of by the stripes of his trousers. Asbiky Park, a pleasant sea side resort cf New Jersey, byway of di version, has recently had a proees sion of babies. Such a spectacle, no doubt, was quite novel ami interest ing. but it was slightly injudicious to let ten pairs of twins into it There are many marriageable young men who visit sea side resots, and who become quite timid at the mere men tion of twins. These gentlemen may easily be frightened into celibacy by such a display as that which occurod at Asbury Park. Invkntive genius has found expres sion through the medium of au In diana man. This scientific pcison has produced a combined step lad der,. cot, ironing board and chair. This contrivance will be found very convenient. When the neighbors send over to borrow the step ladder, it can be in use in the laundry, or some member of the family can hate gone to sleep in the chair arrange meat, with orders that he is not, uo <kr say circumstance, to lie dis- I tit NEAR THE EQUATOR. The misunderstandings betwet n the five pety Republics of Central! 'America, which have long been smouldering, have finally resulted in war. The details of the collision are vaguely reported, and it is well to accept repoils froir these volcanic ! countries with a degree of reserve. 1 The antagonists have been nagging lat each other for years, and an in | vestigation into the substantial | causes of grievance would be as ! bootless as an attempted mquiry into the orginal principles underly ing the Eastern Question. It is a source <<t regret that this war should follow so close upon the heels of the recent Pan-American ■conference. One of the most impor-; tant resolutions which were adopted iby this congress was that all dis putes between American nations were to be submitted to the arbitra tion of neutral power. Our sworthy brethren from the equator threw themselves into each others arms in their professed zeal for such a pacific solution of all international differences, and it was hoped that, so far as the Western Hemisphere was concerned, Utopia had been found again, and that wars and ru mors of wars would forever be si lenced. But human nature is so frail, and the failings of our cousins, of Span ish blood, are so well known and have been so frequently chronicled, i hat their latest delinquency creates i little surprise. It is pleasant to dream, with the I philosophers, ot universal peace, but i the experience of the world is that the natural condition of man is a state of war. Although the preten tion of the age has been to remove the differences.of nations from the ; domain of force to be adjudicated in the forum of arbitration vet the evidence of a want of confidence in, the abiding cllleacv of such u medi ! urn have been exhibited in the per ma lent maintenance of the means of enforcing the original-views of the disputant in case of an unsatisfac tory derision from the arbitrator. There is a great deal of human ua tine exhibited in the family of na ' tious, and the disputes of our young friends from near the Equator have not, probably, a different termination from what we w.ll observe when ' some qf our more influential cousins :necaught in a t ighi place. Joiix Si-labs has at last thrown oil the mask, and in a card, addressed by some of his frinids io the public, sa\ s that he repudiates the dem<k ra ti, primary. and«aill make the race ■ for the legislature as an indepen dent candidate. Spears, by this I course, directly etultilies himself, for he has, beretuibic, plainly said. ' that it the claims of the candidates for the legislature were to be sub 1 mitted to a prima.y, he would abide 1 its’decision. His course surprises no one. for he is known as a chronic I disorganizer, and a man who is ready Ito profess any political principles for the sake of an oilice. The hypo , racy ot his pretensions to be either a democrat or a consistent prohibi tionist has been exposed in these columns. He will now come to the front as the candidate of the negroes and the republicans, and us such he should be entirely defeated. He will attempt to induce the working men of the city to support him. but intelligent mechanijs will beware of j supporting a man in whose political ! principles no man can have conti deuce. Fob the first time in Georgia, since I Mil, a court mart’al convened in this city on yesterday for the pur pose ot trying u member of the Light Horse Guards, upon the charge of ' iusuboraination at the late encamp .ueut. The decay into which the military law of this state has fallen iis evidenced by the fai t that it is ! quite uncertain what penalty is pro vidcd by the law for such an offense as that with which the accused has ! been charged. A most wholesome example is set. looking to the pres I eivatiou of discipline, by pr.miptiv : i investigating, before a military trib < unal, so gross a breach of discipline ' as that upon which the accused has been tried. lx an interview with Hon. T. M. , Norwood, hq states that he "ill not I aetiiely oppose* (’o). Lester foi rt noininutioa for congress from this I district.
