ODDS AND ENDS.
The nude has noticeably diminished
hi the Paris salon. It doesn't sell as it
used to sell, having declined in fashion
with the demimonde, and the leading
artists are now somewhat careful about
warning off by too startling displays the
steadily increasing number of young
women pupils of recognized respectabil
ity.
Hypnotism has reached that point
that the French authorities think of
creating a superior council of medical
jurisprudence at the ministry of justice,
to be composed of medical men and
magistrates, who will be required to
g(ve opinions as to the responsibility of
criminals in connection with the ques
tions of suggestion and hypnotism and
of heredity.
A monstrous chunk of ore was taken
from the Mountain Consolidated mine
at Butte City, Mont., a few days ago.
It was too large to put on a two horse
wagon and a four horse team was
used. The ore is estimated to weigh
nearly four tons and is nearly solid
copper and silver. It has been bound
with hoops of iron and boxed up, pre
paratory to shipment, probably to Eu
rope.
A movement has at last started against
the gates and bars which are still put
across somo London streets by the ad
jacent landholders. The select com
mittee of the house of commons ap
pointed for its consideration has passed
the preamble of the bill promoted by
the London county council for the re
moval of certain gates ami bars on the
estate of the Duke of Bedford.
Pound Keeper Finn, of New York,
estimates the dog population of that
city at from 25,000 to 30,000. During
the past year the dog catchers caught
7,468 dogs, 300 of which were redeemed
by their owners paying $3 tine, the re
mainder being asphyxiated.
In 1801 there were thirty five trans
lations of the Scriptures in existence;
since the formation of the British and
Foreign Bible society in that year ten
millions of money has been expended
in the work of circulating the Bible,
and there are now nearly 300 transla
tions of the Scriptures.
In a letter written by Thomas Jeffer
son in 1771 to a friend in London there
is an order for “1-2 doz. pr. India cot
ton stockings for myself at 10s a pair.”
Ten shillings is an equivalent of $2.50
—a big price for a pair of cotton stock
Ings. Owing to knitting machines,
cheajicr cotton, etc., they now cost
about that sum per dozen.
The present year is the tercentenary
of the discovery of the microscope,
which in its crude form was due to
Jansen, a spectacle maker of Middle
burg, Holland. The occasion is to be
celebrated by an international micro
scopic exhibition, which is to be shortly
held at Antwerp, when an endeavor
will be made to bring together a col
lection of instruments which will fairly
show the progress of the microscope,
from its simple original form to that of
the present oay.
A somewhat unusual depoeit was
made with the Notre Dame Savings
bank in Montreal some time ago for
safe keeping. It consisted of a Bible
221 years old. The work is said to be
in a good state of preservation and to
be a Lutheran Bible, published in
Amsterdam in 1669 by 8. Des Marots,
professor of theology in one of the uni
ver i tics of Holland, and his son, who
styles himself “a minister of the gos
pel.” It is a French version of the
Scriptures and illustrated.
The great wall of China, extending
for twelve hundred English miles along
what was once the whole northern
frontier of the Chinese empire—from
twenty to twenty-five feet high, wide
enough for six horses to run abreast
and furnished with a suitable number
of gates and bastions—contains, it has
been carefully estimated, more material
thnn all the buildings of the British
empire put together.
A four-in-hand coach race lately took
place from Vienna to Presburg. The
participants were among the elite of
Austrian aristocracy. Count Wimpfel’s
team was the winner, covering the dis
tance in three hours. The first prize
was 1,000 gulden and a gold medal; a
gold medal was the second prize. Vi
enna and Presburg society turned out
almost en masse to see the race, and
the roads Im 4 ween the tw-o cities were
tlironged with sightseers.
It is not twenty years since the Jap
anese began to reform their institu
tions, and during that time nothing has
more clearly shown their adaptability
and intelligence than the progress which
they have made in education. Out of
6.740,92 ) children of school age in the
empire 2.809,000 are enrolled in the
public .‘•- hools, while universities, com
merci’ll ■‘ •bools, schools of line art and
of music, schools for the deaf, dumb
and blind, law courses in German,
French and English, libraries and mu
seums nfl form part of a thorough and
progressive system.

it is said that no other material is cupu
