speaker Reed to have the force bill

lar buttons, and instructed to vote
• those reinforcements at the navy
yard in favor of his democratic op
ponent.
In their platform of 1888, the re
publicans pledged themselves to a
1 revision, not to a reduction, of the
i war tariff It is hardly fair to poor
Mr. McKinley, therefore, for republi
cans to desert him. when he is at
tempting to carry out the pledge of
his party, and to go strutting around
in democratic clothes.
• There are thirty-live methods of
inflicting the death penalty which
the ingenuity of man has devised.
Out of all of these, none, probably,
has ever furnished a more horrilde
spectacle than was witnessed at Au
burn, New York,When the alterna
ting currents of a» powerful dynamo
were turned on and off the body of
Kemmler.
A republican newspaper says that
it is useless for the democrats to put
money into Tom Reed's district. In
view of the fact that the navy yard
of speaker Reed’s district is being
crowded with voters, who
arc to be paid by the government, it
might be considered useless for in
dividual enterprise to attempt to

THE ADVANCE GUARD.
On last Monday two states of this
I union held their elections. If the
action of two such states as Alabama
and Kentucky can be taken to mean
any thing, the conclusion must be.
that the course of the republican
party in congress has had the effect
jof thoroughly solidifying the dem
ocratic party.
In Alabama, the democratic ma
jority has been raised to nearly one
hundred thousand. The republicans
have carried scarcely a county in the
state. In Kentucky, the majority
' will probably reach forty live thous
and. This is a gain democracy of 125
per cent over the last gubernational
election, and a gain of fifty percent
over the democratic majority in the
Cleveland vote of 1888. Counties in
Kentucky that the republicans have •
succeded in carrying for years past
have wheeled into line with the dem
ocracy.
These returns arc but the advance
guard, and indicate something of the
fueling which has been aroused
amongst the people on account of
the revolutionary legislation of the
republican leaders. Men, who have
never before voted the democratic
ticket, have done so in these elec
tions, seeing that the republican par
ty Las become a sectional party, and
is ready to sacrifice the south for the
sake of .parly expediency. They see
the hopelestness of trying to build
up a republican party in the south,
m the face of such methods, anil so
they cast in their political fortunes
with their friends and neighbors.
These ire the first responses of the
people to the challenge of Reed,
Lodge and McKinley. The Autumn
elections will soon be at hand, and
if the fears of the republicans or the
i *
hopes of the democrats count for •
any thing, there will lie very Jittfe ■
left of the republican party after the
ides of November are passed.
The state convention has met and
adjourned, having transacted its
business in an unusally expeditions
5 manner. The sole object of the con-1
s vention seems to have been the nom-,
1 iualion of candidates. The commit-1
tee upon resolutions managed to get j
in a small platitude towards the tail
! end of the convention. Aside from
endorsing the national platform of
1888, and agreeing to support e the
nominees, nothing of consequence
‘ was said. As to tbe great, living
’ qnestionsof the day, the conven-
• turn was absolutely silent. As to
1 the opinion of the democracy of
> Georgia upon the heresy of tne sub
treasury scheme, there has been no
official deliverance. For the lack of
any evidence to the contrary, the
democracy of this state may favor the
force bill, and regard Speaker Reed as
a saint. Altogether the “resolutions,”
as adopted by the convention, were
wanting in that decision and ring
ing aggressiveness which it is pleas
ant to hear, aud which characterizes
the most authoritative expressions
of the democracy of some other
states.
Tile most bitter political campaign
which has ever occurred in South
Carolina lias come to a close with the
party of Tillman victorious at all
points. Some novelties in the way
of converting opponents to the views
of the orators have been in vogue
throughout the campaign, and the
excessive witticism of calling the
other man a liar has been one of the
stock arguments applied, whilst the j ]
old fashioned knock down argument!
has, in many instances, been substi
tuted by the more forcible method
(
of knock down and drag out. It is
not surprising therefore, that a can i
paign of education and enlighten- i
went has resulted. The stall-fed ,
bourbon democracy of the state stir
renders its traditional privilege of
holding all of the offices not less ,
reluctantly than did its renowned
