Two well known young gentlemen >1
that city, being at variance upon a
matter of peculiar interest to them
selves, presumably a love aifuir,
sought to end their diil'erenccs by a
resort to the code duello, alter the
most approved French method. The
challenge was passed, the weopons
chosen and the Held selected. Every
detail of punctilio was rigidly ob
served, save the trifling matter of
silence. Hut even this apparent
neglect may have merely been an at
tempt to introduce the chivalrous
methods of France upon American
soil. According to the F rench school,
the second,, to the number of not less
than a dozen should be present; the
surgeons and ambulances should
be sufficient, the poet who is to sing
of the heroic event must not be for
gotten, and in addition to these, i
select company of invited friends,
and that portion of the general pub
lie who are expert in sniffing the bat
tie from afar, also honor the occasion
>‘ by .their presence. It is probable
that all of this had been foreseen by
the two gentlemen from Americus,
but it is also probable that they had

BRITISH EMIGRANTS.
The present outlook fin southern
agriculture is better than it has been
for many years. The-average condi
tional cotton is exceptionally high.
Coin is looking splendidly, with
everv prospect of a large yield. An
unusually large stock of grass and
clover hay has been made, and the
later crops will be beyond the aver
age.
Cable advices from Europe are of I
quite another character. A London
special to the New York Herald,
says:
“England is likely to require .ill the
cereals that America can send her
this year, for the present weather
and the cold blighting winds ate rap.
idly destroying our own crops. Hay
is rotting on the ground, wheat is
getting mildew and the fields are be
ing turned into ponds. Nothing is
ripening, and as for the fruit, nearly
all we get comes, like most other
tilings, fro* 2 abroad. We are more
and more depending upon foreign
supplies for provisions and delicacies
of every kind, and every year makes
the prospect worse and worse for the
English farmer.
“His fortune seemed likely to be
more favorable the present season,
but ruin set in and has rarely ceased
since the beginning of June. The
country is wrapped up in gloom.”
England has a large population of
fuehanded farmers. Many of them
were once very wealthy, but success
ive poor crops, combined with high
taxes, the competition of foreign
products, and other well-known
causes, have materially reduced the
fortunes of all the well to do farmers,
and are driving those dependent
solely on their annual crops into
other occupations or to emigration.
The vast areas of unoccupied land
in the south, the fertility. of the
soil, the salubrity of the climate, the
as urunce of .‘ash market ipr every
farm product, would, if property pre
sented in Great Brittiun. induce
. thousands of desirable citizens to
leave that country and settle in the
sm th. Here is legitimate work for
state immigration bureaus.
Unless some change for the bet
tea should come over -the negro labor !
ot the country, there is darfger of
the economic side of the negro ques- •
tion being solved by the rate itself, i
The notoriously unreliable qualities!
of the negro as a laborer threatens
to compel those who employ him to
seek relief in other quarters. The
saw mill men of Georgia are peculiar!
victims to the caprices of their fickle I
African employes. The agricultural ■
industry is greatly embarrassed by
the uncertainty of the negro labor |
upon which it is foiced to rely. I
These complaints are an old story. ,
But the saw mill men claim that!
they have suffered to the limits of!
patience. They now are proposing
to seek a remedy iti the importation ;
of white labor from Europe, upon ■
which they can depend. Such a
solution may be of advantage to all
parties concerned. The mill men
may be able to provide relief for
themselves, whilst the negro, being
unable to find employment so ]Jenti
ful in the cotton states, may emigrate
to other sections, where removal
from the masses of his race and aI
more intimate contact with a more
i intelligent class of labor will tend
i to improve and elev at .’ his condition.
The instances are numerous'
where one or more thoroughly deter
mined men have been able to over
come huge numbers of people and
direct them at their will The ex
ample set by the famous train rob
ber, Jessie James, and the temporary
success of his ventures nave from
time to time, had a tribe of imita
tors, whose brief careers have soon
been run. These daring train rob
beries have of late been confined to
the thinly populated West. It issur
prising, therefore, to read that in
the thickly populated state of Mis
souri, at no great distance from Kan
sas City, a train on the Missouri
Pacific railroad is stopped by a half
dozen men and the express car is
rifled ofs9ooo in money, the robbers
escaping. Few train robberies have
ever been thwarted. The determined
assault of a mere handful of men
seems to paralyze the power of resist
auce upon the part of large num
bers who under other circumstances
are not ordinarily found wanting in
courage.
The census will show that the <m
debteduess of the nation ami of the
states has decreased more than
$1(410,000,000 wi'Jiin the past ten
years. On the other band,
the i ilibts of the cities have
greatly increased. Successful mu
nicipul government is un uusohed
