of retaliation.
I t i> rumored that the Alliance
will induce Dr.Feltonto become
I candidate for the senate in'opposition
to Gov. Gordon. There will probably
be other candidates also, but when the
vote has been taken' it will be
found that the people of Georgia are
not ready to repudiate Gov. Gordon
I upon a falseissue like the sub
treasury scheme.
In The state of Akansas the two
candidates for Governor arc respect
ively a Methodist preacher and a
Baptist preacher. In their contest,
political lines have been largely 7 ob
literated, and the issue has narrowed
down to a square fight between the
two churches. There are no large
towns in Arkansas. the great
mass of the population being of a
rural character. Amongst these the
church holds a powerful sway, and
the campaign is becoming more an
imated than if the sectarian element
had not become involved. ’

It is understood that the actress
Mary’ Anderson, will make one more
positively last appearance. The
reason assigned for this course,
is that she is under obligations to
her old manager. Mr. Abbey, and is
unwilling to break faith with him.
M. de Navarro, the husband of the
actress, consents very reluctantly to
the professional reappearance of his
wife, as he had understood that the
public career of his wife had come
to a close when he married her. It
may be possible that Miss Ander
son s honey moon has early waned,
and that the allurements of the foot
lights have reasserted themselves in
away that she had not anticipated.
It may be surprising to many to
learn of the progress which Japan
has recently made in adopting a
constitutional form of government.
Greater progress has been made by
Japan in this direction than in any
of the larger countries of Europe,ex
cept England. The first election
has just l>een held under their con
stitulion, and has been eminently
satisfactory in its results. That is
to say, it was satisfactory to the i
great body of the people. The old I
moss backs, and they seem to have |
them in Japan as elsewhere, are dis-1
satisfied with the results because
most of the offices went to younger
men. But it could not be ex|iected '
that the traditional office holders
would surrender a good thing with
out some dissatisfaction.
MIDSUMMER ACTIVITY
The Manufacturer's Record of
. August 23, says:
Some idea of the activity that
prevails in all industrial liies
throughout the south, and of the
wide diversity of this development,
may be gained from a brief summary
of the new enterprises reported in
this week’s issue of the Manufac
turer’s Record. In Virginia con
tracts have been practically closed
for the investment of $1,500,000 of
English money in Glasgow; at Sus
j folk a $300,000 improvement com
pany has been organized; at Staun-
• ton a $50,000 woodworking plant; at
■ | Roanoke a $500,000 iron works; at
Danville a $300,000 improvement
company; at Suffolk a $25,000 elec
tric light company; at Basic City a
’ SIOO,OOO woodworking factory at
Rockland a $25,000 mill; at Radford
’ $150,000 water works and electric
company. In Florida there is a
J great activity in phosphate devel
opements, and during the week a
$300,000 company, a SIOOO,OOO com
pany, a $250,000 company and a
$200,000 company have been organ
s ized to mine phosphate rock and
! establish fertilizer works; at Fernan
dina a $30,000 ice factory is to be
built. In Tennessee a $500,000 cot-
■ ton mill is to be built, and two
• rolling mills, one to cost $100,000;
.1 a $90,000 brewery, a flour mill and
f $30,000 powder works. A SOOO,OOO
s coal mining company has been or
s gauized in Texas, a SSOO 000 light
s and heat company in Louisiana,
$75,000 electric company in Texas,
a $50,000 lumber company in Ar
I kansas, two lumber companies of
'' SIOO,OOO and $42,000 res-
pectively in Texas, a $50,000 granite
• company in South Carolina, $300,000
II \ brick .works in Washington, $50,000
8 I brick works in Georgia .and $50,000
j brick works in Louisiana, an d a
I $50,000 shoe manufacturing com
! pany in North Catolina. Os smaller
enterprises the number is very large,
j and includes saw mills, ice factories,
. cotton seed oil mills and many other
s enterprises.
With such activity as this in mid
summer, when southern people are
closely occupied it getting ready to
handle their great cotton crop, and
when northern peoule arc waiting for
the return of fall before taking an
active part in southern development,
it is difficult to predict what stirring
times will be seen later on in the
’ season., Ina month the cotton crop
’ will .be moving freely and money’
will be very abundant, and northern
capitalists will by that time be
3 ready to begin their southward
• march in great numbers.
' It seems to be understood that the
remains of Gen. Grjiut will here
moved from New York to Washing,
ton, where the government will un
Ideitaketo erect u monument over
his grave that will be appropriate to
the dead and worthy of the honor of
the nation. The shameless attitude
of New Yoik's millionaires, in refus
ing to contribute the money neces
sary for the purpose of erecting a
suitable monument upon the ’spot
first selected for his resting place,
.is a commentary upon the palriot-
I ism of the richest and greatest city
-of America.
Tits latest outrage of the Pinker -
' ton men in shooting down defense
less persons at Albany, N. Y., has
aroused the country to the necessity
of disarming these ruffianly mercen
iarics. Organized at Chicago in
1552, the latter history of this sys
l tem is red with the blood of inno
| cent persons. The American people
j will no longer tolerate an organiza
tion which would not be permitted
to exist in any of the despotisms of
Europe, save only Russia, and which
is so dangerous to the rights and
liberties of the people.
The constitutional convention of
Mississippi is disposed to consider
very carefully the question of con
ferring the right of sullrags upon
women. Such action is quite a step
in the direction of advanced thought.
Bnt the anti prohibitionists fear the
' consequences of the enfranchisement
of women, and will make a strong
fight in opposition to it. They fear
that Mississippi would become a
, prohibition state, in case the ladies
had a voice in the matter. The mat
, ter of qualifying the suffrage in
some way is the great question that
|is puzzling the convention. Il has
| even been proposed that conviction
of every otfense from murder to
gambling, including the selling of
j lottery tickets, shall work a forfeit
i uro of the right of suffrage. Per
haps a stringent law against prize
| fighting night also bolster up the
, dignity of the state. To this end
Ithose renounced pugilists Messrs.
Sullivan and Kilraiu might he called
before the convention to testify us
experts.
