MPt'ie a man would throw himself
the mercy of the court. It is
Vidic to speculate upon the metaphy
■ sics of this female vagarie, but the
IL common observation of the world is,
F that no matter how closely she may
be cornered, a woman will never
confess her guilt.
The people of South Carolina, after
cursing each other out until the voc
abulary has been exhausted, have
fallen upon their knees and are in
voking the -devise bleeping upon
themselves and pray that wisdom
may bo given the wicked people of
the other aide to permit such rulers
to be chosen as may be agreeable to
the suppliants. The Supreme Ruler
of the Universe was never petitioned
to hear a more selfish prayer than
that which is offered by the rule on
ruin Bourbon democrats who have
gotten themselves into a tight place.
The remains of Ericson, the inven
tor sf the monitor, have been sent by
the government of the United States
to Sweden, the land of his birth. A
United States man of war bore his
ashes from New York harbor with
pomp and ceremony. The opportune
invention of Ericson of the armored
vessel, known as the Monitor prob
abb' prevented the success of the
southern confederacy. Up to the
date of the invention, the Confeder
acy was in posession of a vessel
which was considered invincible in
naval warfare, and which would pro
bably have sunk the Federal fleet
and bombarded New York.
The degenerate people of the effete
East were shown recently a glimpse
of war, as she is fought in our wild
and roaring West. Buffalo Bill and
Dr. Carver have each been starring
it over Europe as the possessor of
the only wild west show. They hate
each other with a fourteent h century
frenzy, and unfortunately the two
troupes met recently at Hamburg.
An encounter of the cow boys and
Indians of the respective companies
look place in the streets, which “but |
for the interference of the police"
would have led to great blood shed.
We may imagine the consternation
which prevailed amongst the peace- !
ful burghers of Hamburg, when the
warwhoop was raised.
DECADENCE OF GAMBLING.
The New York World has this to
«ay upon the alledged increase of
the vice of gambling.
‘-A thoroughly sincere ami esti
mable moralizer in New Hampshire
has been bewailing the prevalence
1 of gambling among Americans and
insists that we are a nation of gam
, biers. It is true that there is alto
gether too strong a passim for get
ting something for nothing. That
, is a vice of humanity—the relic of
a time when the law of might pre
( vailed in the world and when men
took what they could and kept what
they had with the power of the
stronger arm.
; “Getting more than one pays for
is the basis of trade as well as of
gambling. The employer's profit is
increased by getting more work than
. he pays for, and the employee is
made happy if he can take advant-
. age of an opportunity to work fewer 1
. hours than he is paid for. The man
who grows rich by a rise in stocks
’ or by the “unearned increment’’ of
'* land, the manufacturer who obtains
i a bounty in the form of what is eu
; phemistically called protection—all
these get something for nothing.
“But the gambling of which our
New Hampshire contemporary takes
notice is that which depends on
g pure hazard. We bet money and
c we win or lose. We play cards or
E throw dice or buy a lottery ticket,
j- It is an idle waste of money and de
moralizing to those who indulge in
it But we cannot agree to the pes-
I simistic view to which we have al
-5 hided. We dp not believe that the
f country is so bad in this respect as
? it has been painted; that widespread
e misery is occaisoned by the reckless
gambling of persons who have
g i small incomes or who thus squan
r pier funds with which they are in-
I I trusted. We do not believe this,
e j simply because the signs of the
1 daily life about us do not point to
I the existence of such wide-spread I
r corruption and profligacy.
s i The world is distinctly growing
better. We do not expect to be ask
cd to bet on cards if we go out for
i the evening as our fathers were com
li' polled to do a bundled years ago if,
■■ in the language of their day, they
c I “cut a figure" in the fashionable,
11 1 world. We sometimes hear of the
9 i ruin of a man at the gaming table, I
9 ! but we oftener hear of ruin in Wall
( street. Risking money on the turn
of a card is not sv common a vice
11 that we live in an atmosphere where
3 chance rules. There might be a
good deal less gambling than there
is with advantage to the country,
’ \ but there is no occasion for despair, I
| ami it is certainly' a bad way to bet-!
3 I ter the morula of men by telling un
truths about them.

. Ihe new agent of destruction
which has come into existence, in
• the form of the cyclone, offers a
legitimate subject for the investi
gation of the government. The ter
rors of the sea have been reduced to
a minimum by the accurate charts ,
' which the government supplies, and
by the perfected knowledge of winds ;
and currents. The mysteries of the
J lightning have been fathomed, and 1
the thunderbolt has been harnessed ,
to do the will of man.
The growing frequency of these ■
terrible tornados suggests that there i
must be some cause for them which ’
has not become known to science.
It would, therefore, be well for con
gress to appoint a cyclone commis
sion, composed of the most eminent'
scientists whose especial researches
have been in the direction of meteor- .
( ology, and allow these gentlemen to
devote their best thought to the dis
( covery of the origin of the cyclone !
( and the application of the remedy, i
! Occasionally the wisdom of .the
1 rules of the common law of England j
- are brought to our notice in a forci- j
8 ble manner, after we have departed
■ from the spirit that inspired them.
- The English law forbade ownership '
1 in the soil by a foreigner upon the !
1 grounds that he had no interest in ,
- the government or the institutions
I of the country. This principle until
recently prevailed in all of the states j
s of the union. But yielding to the
“ exigences of immigration and acting
I upon the idea that such a rule was 1
( antiquated and applicable alone to a
. government based upon feudaj
, principles, the rigor of the law became ’
relaxed, until in many states fore
igners now stand in the proprietor
ship in the soil, upon the same foot
iug as citizens. The general belief “
now is that the time has come to
J cull a halt, and that absentee land
j lordism is threatening to become as
Jatigeruus a factor in the life of this
country as it has. for ages, been to
Ireland. It may be too late to nndo ’
j that which has already been done, 'j
but fur the future American ai.il *;
