ROOSTER AND PARROT.
•
THU MODERN POEM YOU’LL FIND IN A MINUTB j
11 AS MORE TRUTH THAN POETRY IN IT.
There wa* a little rooster.
Not very long ago,
Who thought he was a booster.
You'd ought to hear him crow.
He noticed when he hallooed
Tne sun rose in the sky.
Said he: “It think* I called it,
And that’s the reason why.”
Hi* head was high and empty,
His craw w as full of gall.
He strutted around the hen-coop
And thought he knewJt all
When older birds, and wiser,
Who had wen a thing or two,
Raised their heads and tried, sir;
‘•Their cock—a-dcodTfc-do!”
He swore he could not bear it,
And shook his bead with vim,
He called each one a “parrot,
Wh dared to crow, but him.
The earth he claimed before him,
A far as he could sec,
Its creature* should adore him.
And bend the supple knee.
No hen should laugh and cackle,
Nor should old Chanticleer
W ith sturdy voire and mettle,
Ring oat his lusty cheer.
The little rooster knew not,
But thought to his surcease;
11 he held back and crew not,
Sun, earth and stars would cease.
Hi* cheek grew a* he nursed it.
His pride was on the swell.
Till hi* gall-bladder burs ted
Ami all hi* feathers fell.
They took hi* body dusty,
Out tow'rd the garbage heap,
b £» And from the shovel nistv
They tossed kirn down to sleep

BIG b - v' MILL BURNS.'
M Vast Amount of Property Swept
Away Last Night.
Last night witnessed the destruc
tion of the largest saw mill on the
East Tenncesee railroad. The mill
was the property of Mr. J. A. Rice,
and was located a few miles south of
Chauncey. The loss was almost
total and will doubtless embarras
the owner, unles it is counterbalanced
by heavy insurance.
The fire broke out about lOo’clock
last night, and is supposed to have
originated from a spark from the
engine. As soon as it was discovered
the engineer blew his whistle loud
and long, calling everybody to the j
scene of action. All who were living ■
in the vicinity answered the sum-1
mons, and manfully did they fight
for the mastery of the fiend. It was
all in vain however. On account of I
the continued drought, everything;
was soon swept away by the flames.
Even the railroad track was burned
for about thirty yards, north and I
south bound trains being compelled
to stop. ‘
When the flumes W’ere gotten under
control, the news was wired the Eust
Tennessee authorities at Macon, and
a force of hands sent down to repair
the burned track. It was on account
of this fire that the East Tennessee
train was delayed this morning.
