It is joyous, in the midst of peril ous times, to look around upon a people united in heart, where one purpose of high resolve animates and actuates the whole—where the sac rifices to be made are not weighed in the balance against honor, and right, and liberty, and equality. Obstacles may retard, they cannot long prevent the progress of a movement sanctitied by its justice and sustained bv a vir tuous people. Reverently let us in- 1 voke the God of our fathers to guide , and protect us in our efforts to per petuate the principles, which, by His blessing, they were able to vindicate, establish and transmit to their pos terity, and with a continuance of Hi* favor, ever gratefully acknowledged, we may hopefully look forward to success, to peace, and to prosperity. The Man Monkey of Brazil. The captain of the French schoon- 1 er Adrienne, who was stationed last summer at Pernambuco. Brazil, gives the following sketch of a tame mon key: A short time ago 1 dined at a Brazilian merchant’s. The conversa tion turned upon the well-tutored chimpanzee of Mr. Vanneck, a creole gentleman, whose slave had brought the monkey which he caught in the woods. Everyone praised the accom plished animal, giving accounts of its talents so wonderful that 1 could not help expressing some incredulity.— Mv host smiled, saying that I was not the first one who would not believe in these results of an animal educa tion until he had seen it with his own eyes, lie therefore proposed to me to call with him on Mr. \ anneck.— I gladly consented, and on the follow ing morning we set out. file house f the cr< Hies on t road to t)lt la about an hour s ride from town. \\ e proceeded along splendid hedges ot cactus, shaded bv bananas and pa: m trees, ami at length observed tiie charming villa. A negro received us at the entrance, and took us to the parlor. h..s: •amg to tel l his master of onr visit, i’iie nrst object that caught our attention was the monkey seated on a stool and. sewing with great in .. - v. J?k went am night sevei al glasses of lemonade on a tray, lie first pre s ;nt d the t *ay to Madame Jasmin and her daughter, then to us, precise ly like a well bred footman. \\ lien 1 had emptied mv glass, he hastened to releive me of it. putting it back on the trav. Mr. \ anneck took out his watch and showed it to the monKey: it was just three. Jack went and brought a cup of broth to his master, who re- , marked that the monkey did not know the movements of the watch, but he knew exactly the position of the hands when they pointed to three, ’ kept it in mind that it was- then his master required his Innclic If the watch was shown to him at other hour, he did not go to fetch th., broth: while, if three o'clock was passed without the luncheon being called for, he got fidgety, and at la.-.;, ran and brought it; in tiiis case he was always rewarded with sugar plums. “You have no notion." said Mr. Vanneck, “how much time and trou ble, and especially how much patie nce I have bestowed upon this ani mal. Confined to my chair, however, I continued my task methodically.— Nothing was more difficult then to ac custom Jack to bis clothes; he took off his pantaloons again and again, until at last I had them sewed to his shirt. When he walks out with me he , wears a straw hat, but never without making fearful grimaces. He takes a bath every day, and is on the whole ! very cleanly. “Jack,” exclamed Mr. Vanneck, j pointing to me, “this gentleman wants his handkerchief:” The monkey drew I it from my pocket and handed to me. ' “Now show your room to my , quests,” continued his master: and I Jack opened the door, at which he ' stoped to let us pass, and thciUblkwV-1 ed himsef. Everything ly tidy in the small r . Ln it was a bed with a mattress a table, some ehairs, drawers and various toys: a gam hung on the wall. 'The bell was j rung: Jack went and reappeared with his master, wheeling in the chair. — i Meanwhile, 1 had taken the gun ! from the wall. Mr. Vanneck hand I ed it to the monkey, who brought j the powder flask and the shot bag, ' and in the process of loading acquit- | ted himself like a rifleman. I had seen so much that was astonishing, that 1 hardly felt surprised at this fact. 1 Jack now placed himself at the window, took aim and disclaimed if I and without being in the lca«start lel bv tie report., lie them went through the sword exercise with the same skill. It would be t(X> long to jot down all Mr. Vanneck told us about his method of education and training: the above facts, witnessed by myself, bear sufficient evidence of the abili ties of the animal, and its master's ta lents of tuition. We staved to sup per. to which there camo some more ladies and gentlemen. Jack again exhibited his cleverness in waiting, at which he acquitted himself as well as any man servant. Going home, mv companion missed a small box df sweets, out of which he had regaled the monkey with almonds. Jack had managed to steal it from his pocket: and on being afterwards convicted of the theft, he was severely punished by his master. — (tol.ien l-'ra. The at tention of females cannot be too con- I fidently invited to this remedy and restorative i in the eases peculiarly affecting therm In Rheumatism, both chronic and inflammatory —in the latter, however, more decidedly—it ! has 'oeen invariably well reported, both as al- ■ leviating [lain and reducing the swellings am) stiffness of the joints and muscles. In Intermit tent Fevers it must necessarily be a great remc dy and energetic restorative, and its progressin i the new settlements of the West, will probably be one of high renown and usefulness. No remedy has ever ben discovered in the whole history of medicine, which exerts such prompt, happy, and fully restorative effects.— Good appetite, complete digestion, rapid acquisi tion of strength, with an unusual disposition for ! active and cheerful exercise, immediately followr its use.
