County unsure
of additional
liquor license
regulations
By Matthew J. Permar
There have been two traf
fic fatalities on the F.J. Tor-
ras Causeway so far this year
and, according to Glynn County
Police Chief Matt Doering, alco
hol was a “contributing factor”
in one of them.
The driver in that particu
lar accident had a BAC (blood
alcohol content) of .21%, said
Doering. The police chief also
reported that his investigation
revealed that the driver had
been drinking at the Oyster
Shack restaurant in Brunswick
prior to the accident.
Reporting to the Glynn Coun
ty Commission diming their
regular meeting on Thursday,
Aug. 7, Doering said the other
fatality this year was caused by
a “distracted driver.”
“We can’t say with 100% cer
tainty that the driver was work
ing on his computer,” Doering
told the commission, “but the
computer we found in the vehi
cle was open and turned on. So
it is an educated guess.”
Doering was reporting to
the commission at the request
of Commissioners Uli Keller
(Dist. 2) and Cap Fendig (At
Large #2).
Keller was absent from the
meeting attending a military

New island health facility breaks ground
At 8:30 last Friday morning the Southeast Georgia Health System (SGHS) broke ground on
a new physician's office complex and expanded outpatient services facility on St. Simons
Island adjacent to the Immediate Care Center at 5000 Wellness Way. Above, Mark Bedner
(front center), chairman of the Hospital Authority's Building and Grounds committee,
addresses the crowd with remarks about the new facility. "The complex is designed to pro
vide a beautiful home for several of our Cooperative Healthcare Services Inc. physicians as
well as community physicians," said Bedner, "These physicians are purchasing their offices
similar to those in the Health System's Outpatient Care Center. The complex will also include
expanded outpatient services such as lab, x-ray and physical therapy for the convenience
of our patients on St. Simons."
Also on hand were: (left to right) Carl Alexander, Authority vice chairman; Robert Griffin,
Authority member; Michael Sullivan, MD; Gary R. Colberg, president & CEO, SGHS; James
Greene, MD; John Limburg, MD; Thomas "Beau" Sasser Jr., MD; Ralph "Buck" Cavalier, MD;
Ashley Cavalier, MD; Marjorie Mathieu, vice president, SGHS; and Carla Yarbrough, Authority
member. The new two-story, 20,000 sq. ft. facility was designed by island architect Larry
Bryson. It will take a year to complete at an estimated cost of $6.8 million. The facility will be
constructed by Solid Rock Co. of Jesup, with Johnny Campbell as Project Superintendent.

While the companies still
own their individual tracts,
they submitted an application
for one Planned Development

August 5.
Satilla Forest Development

DMR is owned by Richard
