It's the Democrats and
the Republicans
I apologize for the brevity of this edi
torial. I was short on space this week.
We'll just call this Part One and I'll
write some more for next week.
Every week I take the newspaper to
the loading dock on the back side of the
Brunswick Post Office, where I unload
it and drop my paperwork off with the
Bulk Mail Supervisor.
After Hurricane Katrina, there was
a sign posted on the Bulk Mail desk
saying the Post Office wasn't deliver
ing bulk mail - periodicals, Third Class
mail, etc - to New Orleans. There was
a list of zip codes we had to delete from
our address list.
The embargo lasted for about a
number of months, so I was surprised
to learn recently that UPS and FedEx

were making deliveries to New Orleans
within weeks of the hurricane.
One of the things I've learned in
my 18 years as a reporter is that it is
government employees, bureaucrats,
as much or more than politicians, who
are spending our tax dollars.
Even though I knew this, there was
a piece of the puzzle missing... the
fact that in many places government
bureaucracies are not just bureaucra
cies they are unionized as well.
While this is certainly not an indict
ment of all unions, there are many that
are more concerned about obtaining
and keeping power than they are about
providing good service.
How is it that UPS and FedEx cus
tomers can track millions of packages
in real time as they move across the
country, yet the federal government
can't keep up with the estimated 10 to
20 million people living in this country
illegally?
More examples???

was barred by corut order from firing

the 42nd person to use the same fraud
ulent social security number. How is
it the Social Security Dept, can't rec
ognize a number that has been used
fraudulently by 42 different people?
Especially when I can put my bank
card in an ATM almost anywhere in
the world, punch in PIN, have it rec

Over the last 7 years, the U.S. Dept,
of Agriculture has paid more than a
billion dollars to deceased farmers.
Bureaucrats approve payment without
any review 40% of the time.
My favorites... the federal govern
ment spent $878.8 million on nearly
25,000 manufactured homes for Hur-
rican Katrina victims. 11,000 went
unused because FEMA regulations did
not permit them in flood zones.
The topper... FEMA spent $67 mil
lion on 224.3 million pounds of ice
for Katrina victims. Instead of being
delivered to New Orleans, it was stored
in facilities around the country, where
after two years FEMA deemed it past
