National 4-H Week October 5-11.
Close to 200,000 young people are
in 4-H for the leadership experi
ence, competition, and community
service. And they love every minute
of it!
During this time, our local 4-H
Club in Glynn County would like
to thank all of you who truly "Keep
It Green" in Glynn County for our
local club.
And as we celebrate 4-H Week
this week and work at "Still Kee
pin' It Green," we have introduced
an essay competition in our county
middle schools. Each school will
have the opportunity to earn prizes
and have the winning essay printed
in The Islander.
If it were not for those listed
below, many of the local 4-H pro
grams, events and activities would
not be possible for our youth. This
list is only a small token of the heart
felt appreciation we feel for the busi

and otherwise - to solve the problems

Part 5
St. Simons Tree Ordinance
By Don Gardner Glynn UGA Extension Agent
Editor's Note: This week is Part
Five of Don Garner's series of arti
cles explaining various aspects of the
ordinance.
But I don't have room for trees on
my property!
A developer has a lot of choices on
how to meet the fifty percent cano
py requirement. He can save trees,
plant trees, do both, get extra points
for retaining Exceptional trees, save
clumps of trees, retain swamps rather
than filling them, and keep the green
buffer at the edge of the marsh in addi
tion to planting in any buffers that may
be required.
But there are times when there just
is not space for trees on a developing
lot. The village district of Saint Simons,
or as it is legally known, the Overlay
District, is a nearly impossible place to
find space for trees on private property.
In fact it is darned hard to find places
to plant trees on any street rights of
way in the Overlay District. The parks
in the Overlay District are a haven for
trees as well as people.
