Pirates squish
Yellow Jackets
By Joke Harrison
The Brunswick High School (BHS)
Pirates came out firing on all cylinders
Friday night and never looked backed,
winning their Homecoming game in
lopsided fashion. The Pirates defeated
visiting Wayne County High School
28-0, improving to 3-2 on the year and
1-0 in Region 2-AAAA.
BHS did all of their scoring in the
first half, capitalizing on 2 fumbles by
Wayne Comity to score 2 times. Wayne
had another terrible game, fumbling
the ball 5 times and dropping to 0-6 on
the season.
The Pirates engineered scoring
drives of 65 and 82 yards; their first
and last touchdowns came on those
drives. Brunswick’s top contributors on
offense were quarterback Davis Hoyt,
who was 6-16 for 109 yards and one

No. 13 Auburn @ No. 19 Vanderbilt
The long downtrodden Vanderbilt
football program was ready for their
close-up. The Commodores hosted
ESPN’s College Gameday pregame
football show in Nashville, then upset
the Tigers 14-13 with their backup
quarterback McKenzie Adams leading
the offense. Vandy is the leader of the
SEC East division and is 5-0 on the
season, while Auburn is now to 4-2 and
is in third place in the SEC West.
No. 12 Florida @ Arkansas
The Florida Gators were an angry
team after being upset last week by
the Ole Miss Rebels and it showed.
Tim Tebow and the Gators trounced a
struggling Arkansas team 38-7, scoring
21 points in the 4th quarter after a slow
start. Florida improved to 4-1 on the
season, tied with UGA and Kentucky
for 3rd place in the East. Arkansas
dropped to 2-3, last in the SEC West.
Kentucky @ No. 2 Alabama
After whooping then No. 3 UGA in
Athens, the Tide probably expected to
go back to Tuscaloosa and roll right
over the Wildcats. They were in for
a surprise, as the game was in doubt
until an onside kick that bounced out
of bounds with 40 seconds left, giving
‘Bama a 17-14 win. Alabama is 6-0 on
the season and in first place in the SEC
West. Kentucky is 4-1 and is tied for
3rd in the SEC East.
South Carolina @ Ole Miss
This game was just one of the many
examples of how in the SEC, any team
can beat another any given Saturday
(Except Vandy.. .wait). Ole Miss upset
then No. 4 Florida last week and was
looking like a dark horse in the SEC
West race. They raced out to a 14-3 lead
at the end of the 1st and looked as if
they were going to get an easy win.
Then South Carolina’s offense came
alive. The Gamecocks racked up 405
yards of total offense en route to a 31-
24 victory. USC improved to 4-2 on the
season and look to be on their way to
bowl eligibility. Mississippi dropped to
3-3 on the year.
touchdown, and running back Harold
Small, who carried the ball for 93 yards
and a score.
For the defense, Jamie Hippard
returned a fumble for a touchdown
and Marcavius Dudley had 10 tackles.
DeAndre Clay and Jermaine Cash also
recovered fumbles for the Pirates.
Brunswick High has rebounded
nicely from their disappointing loss to
Burke Co. last week and has the spread
offense clicking. Their next opponent is
Effingham, who are 2-4 on the season
with losses to Burke County, States
boro High, Appling County, and South
Effingham.
This game could be a favorable match
up for the Pirates to beat a struggling
Effingham team and improve to 4-2
and 2-0 in Region 2-AAAA before their
annual cross-city rivalry against Glynn
Academy. If BHS loses to Effingham,
they could miss the state playoffs for
the first time in 3 years. □
Northern Illinois @ Tennessee
The Tennessee Volunteers are a
mess. Sure they won the game, 13-9.
But they played Northern Illinois, a 1-3
team picked to finish near the bottom
in the MAC. UTs offense continued
to struggle. Despite changing start
ing quarterbacks, they only put up
one touchdown on a Northern Illinois
Defense that has been giving up an
average of 20 points to powerhouses
such as Western and Eastern Michi
gan. Tennessee could go 1-6 from here
on out and nobody would be surprised.
