cash in-hand for GICA construction to
$19 million, including money put in by
the Glynn Comity Board of Education
and Comity Commission.
Lundell took time last week, along
with Dr. Ralph Gomto, Director of Tech
nology-Career Education and Comity
Commissioner Tony Thaw (Dist. 3) who
is member of the GICA board of direc
tors, to give me a tour of the new techni
cal school.
Explaining the school's layout, Lun-
dell said the main entrance at the front
of the building will lead into a large,
open reception with a cafeteria area off
to one side.
A receptionist will have a desk there
to check folks in and direct them to
their destination.
Down a front hallway from that area
is a suite of offices including space for
the GICA principal, registrar, technical
college campus director and counselor,
Performance Learning Center coordina
tor, high school career guidance counsel
or, Communities In Schools Executive
Director and school nurse.
From there continuing down the hall
that circles a courtyard are the class
rooms, instructor's offices and labora
tories starting with Engineering-Com
puter Aided Design program.
Lundell stressed that space for each
technical instruction program includes
a classroom, laboratory and instructor's
office in close proximity so the instructor
will be in close contact with his or her
students at all times.
"Teachers are required to be pres
ent at all times when the students
are working in the lab areas," Lundell
explained.
Lundell said, "This is going to be a
great school. We will offer a wide range
of programs. And we're blessed to have
this much sapce." “I

"Why don't we get Falcons foot
ball?," I asked politely, knowing full
well that she was not in charge of
what programs we get on our cable
TV system.
But, having that knowledge still did
not prevent me from being stunned by
her answer.
Which was, "We're not in their
broadcast area."
Not in their broadcast area?!?!?!?!?!
It took every fiber of my soul to
not snap back and say, "Yesterday I
watched the Dallas Cowboys and the
Cincinnati Bengals. Which of those
broadcast areas are we in?!?!?"
But, again, not her fault.
She did register my complaint
about not being able to get the Falcons
game, in which, by the by, we beat the
Green Bay Packers... after telling me
there was no one with whom to file a
complaint.
As I said, she's very nice, but left
me with the feeling that I've got a bet
ter chance of seeing a semi-pro lawn
bowling league on local cable than the
Falcons.
Some of my friends are Jaguars'
fans and I understand because Jack
sonville is within easy driving distance
and it's not terribly inconvenient to go
to home games.
And I can and do root for the
Jags and we get their games on TV,
but on any given Sunday I'd rather
watch the Falcons because they are
my home state team and I've been
rooting for them for years, just like I
root for the Braves.
Many of these Jaguar fan buddies
of mine claim loyalty to that team
over the Falcons due to the proximity
of Jacksonville.
To this logic I respond that it is
twice the distance from here to Ath
ens as it is to Gainesville, Fla. so
maybe you should pull for the Gators
on November 1.
I'm getting off track, which is 'why
don't we get Falcons football?'
The sad part is, those of us who are
Falcons fans have put up with years
of mediocrity, with our one shining
moment of glory - losing to the Denver
Broncos 34 - 19 in 1999's Superbowl
XXXIII in Miami.
We suffered the ignominy of a hot-
shot quarterback jailed for dog fight
ing and a coach who walked out not
only in the middle of the season but
in the middle of the night.
And after all the controversy and
lackluster teams we've had, we now
have a new coach and a new quarter
back who have brought the fun back,
who have sparked the team to win,
who are giving the fans and team
something to be cheerful about, some
thing to hope for.
Sure, it will be a huge struggle to
win the NFC South this year, not to
mention very unlikely, but the Fal
cons at 3-2 with a win over Green Bay
are definitely a team to watch over
the next year or so.
Oh yeah, that's right, we can't...
we're not in their broadcast areal

tive positions. We know how hard you
work to recruit minority candidates and
you're making progress," said Sergeant,
"but, continue to work in this area."
"Also, focus your recruiting efforts on
candidates with preparation that aligns
specifically with changing curricular
needs," she said, "Math and science
teachers are hard to come by, but work
extra hard on this."
"Formally monitor and evaluate the
implementation and effectiveness of the
solutions to the high school graduation
rate challenges," Sergeant continued,
"This should include follow-up data
on former students and graduates. It's
important to talk to former students.
What are they doing? Are they in col
lege?"
The school district will receive the
SACS review team's written report in
30 days. At that time the system is
expected to review and communicate the
findings, address the recommendations,
monitor the accreditation standards on
an ongoing basis, monitor strategies for
improvement and submit the Accredita
tion Progress Report.
Once reviewed and approved by the
AdvancED Accreditation Commission
the district and all its schools are grant
ed a five-year accreditation. □
