What s for Dinner. Mom? at Fort Frederica
As a continuation of the Frederica
Folkways Programs an informative
and fun look at the age old question
“What’s for Dinner, Mom?” will be held
Saturday, October 25 from 10 a.m.
until 3 p.m.
A costumed interpreter will spend
the day cooking, explaining and dem
onstrating 18th century cooking tech
niques. New settlers to the infant col
ony of Georgia faced many problems,
not the least of which was keeping
their families fed.
Cooking was a major part of a wom
an’s life at Frederica and it was an
all-day process. A task that started
before dawn to get fires started (that
needed to be tended all day) and did not
end until the last of the clean-up was
finished. Settlers needed to adapt new
foods and cooking methods in order to
survive.
There is no charge for this program
beyond the normal Park admittance
fee. In case of heavy rain call the Park
for reschedule date.
Fort Frederica National Monument
is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission is $3 per person (age 16+).
For further information about these
programs and the expanding number
of programs at Fort Frederica National
Monument, call the park Visitor Center
at 912-638-3639. □

SS Library League to host author Steve Berry
Best selling author Steve Berry will
speak to members of the St. Simons
Library League on Monday October 27
at 12:00 p.m. at the Bonefish Grill.
Berry, a lawyer turned writer grew
up on the Georgia coast and now
makes his home in St. Marys where he
is active in local politics. He endured
85 rejections before making it to the
best seller list with his international
thriller, The Amber Room. His latest
novel, The Charlemagne Pursuit, is
due out in December.
Unlike most writers who are told,
“Write what you know” Berry advises,
“Write what you love.” Berry said he
is fascinated with those pieces of “lost”
history. The Amber Room delves into
the lost library of Alexandria, the
knights of the Templar, the Romanovs.
His recent fast-paced thriller, The
Venetian Betrayal, explores the world
of Alexander the Great.
He credits the nuns who taught
him in school with giving him, the dis
cipline needed to become a writer and
a local writer’s group with honing his
skills and encouraging him.
Berry and his wife Amy have trav
eled the globe to Germany, Austria,
Russia, Italy, Switzerland, and France
in researching his novels. However,
he admits there are some locales he
has not actually visited. Where does
he get such authentic details of those
places? “National Geographiche
Author Steve Berry
said. “That’s why God made National
Geographic!”
Berry is a part of an ongoing series,
Lunch with the Author at Bonefish
Grill, sponsored by the St. Simons
Library League. “We hope these
special events for our members will
encourage everyone to become a mem
ber of the League,” said President Sue
Cansler. Membership applications are
available at the St. Simons library and
at bookstores. “I
