Perdue recognizes Georgians for Acts of
Heroism and Contributions to Public Safety
Governor Sonny
Perdue recently
announced the
recipients of the
Governor’s Pub
lic Safety Awards
(GPSA) at a cer
emony in For
syth recognizing
15 public safety
professionals for
acts of heroism
and four for con
tributions to the
profession. The
recipients were
Sgt. Jason Elliott
given medallions and their names were
added to the GPSA monument at the
Georgia Public Safety Training Center
(GPSTC).
Sergeant Jason Elliott from the
Brunswick Police Department was
a recipient of one of the Heroism
awards.
On March 2, 2008, Sgt. Jason Elliott
responded to the Sidney Lanier Bridge
in reference to a male standing over the
rail of the bridge. The decking of the
bridge is approximately 250 feet above
the river.
It appeared the man was
distraught and was possibly
going to jump. Sgt. Elliott
assured him he was there to
help, calming the man while
stepping cautiously toward
him. The man slightly turned
his body and began looking
down at the water below. Sgt.
Elliott moved into position,
grabbed and pulled him over
the guardrail and onto the
bridge decking.
Sgt. Elliot was able to sub
due and control the person
until an emergency squad
could arrive to transport him to a hos
pital. Thanks to his heroic and selfless
actions, Sgt. Elliot saved a life.
“Georgia is proud to recognize our
law enforcement officers and emer
gency responders for their commitment
to Georgia’s public safety,” said Gover
nor Sonny Perdue. “These individuals
exhibit courage and dedication every
day to keep us safe.”
The annual GPSA program began
in 1998 to recognize the outstanding
accomplishments and commitment of
Georgia’s public safety community.
Signature Square preserves past using
historical information, materials
Signature Squares of Brunswick
is developing historical informa
tion panels to be placed in Hanover
Square and Jekyll Square downtown.
The 36” X 24” panels will trace the
history of these important landmarks
through the eyes of Brunswick resi
dents past and present. Two panels
will be placed in each location.
The group is asking the public
to help. “We are looking for vintage
photos, deeds and other informa
tion about the squares, especially
things that have not been previously
published,” said Julie Hunter, Execu
tive Director of Signature Squares.
“Our goal is to create interesting
and informative signs that allow the
viewer to step back into the past.
“We also hope to compile a thor
ough and fascinating archive of his
torical material that preserves the
architectural, cultural and econom
ic heritage of Brunswick’s public
squares.”
Ml historical items will be photo
graphed and returned to their own
ers. “We are not asking anyone to
surrender his or her priceless docu
ments or mementos,” Hunter said.
Signature Squares seeks the fol
lowing items for copying:
• Deeds to property around the
squares, including businesses and
homes.
• Ads from newspapers, maga
zines or other publications for busi
nesses that have bordered Jekyll
Square throughout its history.
• Family photos of homes, gath
erings, community celebrations or
other activities that took place in or
around these landmark areas. Those
that show a visual marker, such as
the Hanover Square fountain, are
especially desired.
• Photos of items that cannot be
scanned, such as promotional items
from businesses. For example, fans
with the name of a business, blotters
or some similar item.
• Personal memoirs, written or on
audiotape.
To loan an item for the project,
