Glynn Academy
blanks Wayne,
Still in playoff hunt
By Joke Harrison
Despite being just 4-5 on the sea
son, the Glynn Academy Red Terrors
still have a chance to earn a birth in
the 2008 state playoffs after beating
Wayne Comity 19-0.
The Terrors control their own des
tiny and have to beat Effingham (2-6)
this Friday to clinch a spot.
The game was played in a torrent of
rain so it came as no surprise that both
teams played sloppily and turned the
ball over multiple times.
Quarterback Chad Sanders got
the start for GA and played well, but
senior defensive back Brandon Morten
switched over to running back and
jump started a struggling Terrors
offense. Morten had 57 yards rushing
on just 8 carries. Senior Timmy Wilson
also scored a touchdown on the ground,
while sophomore kicker Ben Fendig
notched field goals of 24 and 26 yards.
GA’s defense also played well, forc
ing 5 fumbles by halftime and held an
opposing offense under 10 points for
the third time this season. The Terrors
will need that defense to step up again
if they are to beat Effingham and clinch
their first playoff birth since 2006.
Other GA Sports
The Red Terrors girl’s volleyball
team advanced to the semifinals in the
Georgia Class AAAA state playoffs this
weekend before losing to Sequia 25-18.
This marks the farthest advance in to
the playoffs for GA since 1997. □

Dawgs tame the Tigers
By Jake Harrison
Georgia came into their showdown
with No. 13 LSU missing their best
defensive players and had shuffled the
offensive line rotation for the third time
this season. Many people, including
ESPN’s Lee Corso and NBA superstar
LeBron James, thought this would be
too much for the No. 9 Bulldogs to
overcome. With respect to Mr. James,
he was way off on that one.
Georgia proved that they still deserve
to be in the national championship con
versation after routing LSU 52-38.
Georgia got the pendulum swinging
in their favor on the first play from
scrimmage. LSU quarterback Jarrett
Lee threw a pass that was picked off by
UGA linebacker Darryl Gamble, who
returned it 40 yards for the score.
LSU was able to bounce back on
their next possession, with running
back Charles Scott running on the
UGA defense with apparent ease on
their way to a 10 yard touchdown pass
from Lee to Brandon LaFell. Geor
gia quarterback Mathew Stafford, who
threw for 249 yards and two touch
downs, then orchestrated two touch
down drives that gave them a 21-7
lead.
The Tigers came roaring back, get
ting a field goal and a touchdown on
two more drives in which the UGA
defense appeared incapable of stopping
the run. Bulldogs kicker Blair Walsh
tacked on a 50 yard field goal right
before the half and the score at the half
was 24-17 Georgia.
Dawg fans may have been biting
their collective fingernails during the
halftime break, but the Bulldogs came
out of the locker room ready to play.
Stafford hooked up with freshman
superstar A.J. Green on a 48 yard
bomb that put the Bulldogs up 31-17.
Georgia running back Knowshon
Moreno, who was surprisingly quiet in
the first half, burst through a hole for
a 68-yard touchdown run that gave the
Dawgs some breathing room. Moreno
finished with 168 yard rushing and two
touchdowns.
LSU then attempted to mount a
valiant effort to come back , but Darryl
Gamble had another interception for
a touchdown that iced the game. LSU
went on to score a meaningless touch
down, and the final tally was Georgia
by a 52-38 margin.
Heading into the Largest Outdoor
Cocktail Party against No. 5 Florida
next week, the Bulldogs have a few
concerns. First off, they need to do a
better job of stopping the run. They
gave up nearly 200 yards rushing to
LSU and cannot do so against a Florida
team that scored 63 points in three
quarters against a Kentucky team that
many thought of as decent.
Georgia also must avoid committing
penalties that keep their opponent's
drive alive. The implications of next
week’s showdown are clear to see: a
win basically punches your ticket for
the SEC Title game in Atlanta in
December. Lose and you end up in
some meaningless New Year’s Day
Bowl, disappointed and filled with
regret. □
