FY2007 Annual Report wins
top awards
Savannah, Ga. — November 13,
2008 — The American Association
of Port Authorities (AAPA), Atlanta
chapter of International Association
of Business Communicators (IABC)
and the Georgia chapter of the
Public Relations Society of Amer
ica (PRSA) all awarded the Geor
gia Ports Authority’s (GPA) FY2007
Annual Report: Gateway to Ameri
can Commerce first place in 2008
competitions.
The annual report received the
Award of Excellence from AAPA, the
Golden Flame from IABC/Atlanta
and the Phoenix Award from PRSA
Georgia. This was the second year in
a row GPA’s annual report won top
honors with PRSA Georgia.
AAPA recognized award winners
in October at its annual conference
in Anchorage, Alaska. GPA also
won an award of excellence for its
statewide outreach campaign and
awards of merit (second) for Anchor-
Age magazine and its Gateway to
American Commerce video.
IABC/Atlanta’s honored GPA’s
entries with two silver flame
awards: one for Trade Development’s
“SMART System” (Sales Marketing
Asset Resource Tool) for electronic
media and another for annual report
photography. GPA also received a
bronze flame for annual report writ
ing.
PRSA-Georgia also awarded cer
tificates of excellence (second) for
AnchorAge magazine and GPA’s
GPA selects Pyron as Chief
Commercial Officer
Savannah, Ga. — November 12,
2008 — Cliff Pyron has been named
Chief Commercial Officer for the
Georgia Ports Authority (GPA),
effective December 1, 2008.
Pyron has more than 25 years of
experience in the shipping indus
try. Prior to joining the GPA, Pyron
served as Vice-President of Sales
for NYK Lines in New York, N.Y.,
where he was responsible for all
NYK Line international commercial
liner activity in the Eastern half of
the United States, which includes
managing multi-level staff in two of
NYK’s four regional offices. He also
served as Vice-President of Sales for
Maersk Lines where he was respon-

Georgia’s deepwater ports and
inland barge terminals support more
than 286,476 jobs throughout the
state annually and contribute $14.9
billion in income, $55.8 billion in
revenue and $2.8 billion in state and
local taxes to Georgia’s economy. □
Alternative fuel joint
venture to locate in
Thomas County
Woodlands Alternative Fuels plans
to locate a mill to produce wood pellets
and chips in Thomas County, creating
50 jobs and investing $15 million.
Woodlands Alternative Fuels has
purchased the former Waverly Min
erals facility in the Thomas County
town of Meigs. The company will
use sawmill waste and pulpwood to
manufacture wood pellets for fuel and
horse bedding. Approximately 60 per
cent of the fuel pellets are intended
for the export market for use in power
plants.
Woodlands is a joint venture
between Thomasville consulting com
pany Woodlands Resources of Thom
asville, the Swedish group World
Wood Products and a private investor
based in Jacksonville, Fla.
Michelle Shaw, project manager
for GDEcD, assisted the company in
its location.
