Santa Claus is coming
to the SS Lighthouse
On December 13, from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m., the Historical Society will open
its doors to children of all ages.
The earliest written account in
America of someone resembling Santa
Claus was Washington Irving’s His
tory of New York, first published in
1809. The legend of St. Nicholas a.k.a.
Santa Claus comes from the stories
about the Bishop of Myra (present
day Turkey) who died in 350 A.D.
Santa Claus was popularized in
American culture through Clement
Moore’s 1823 poem, “Twas the Night
Before Christmas.”
At the St. Simons Island Light

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
With Thursday's observance of Thanksgiving, this is truly a time of sincere
thanks for so many things. Family, friends, customers, and prospective
clients are very much appreciated. Comments from readers of this column
are welcome and thoughtful.
Kinds comments, positive reinforcement during causal meetings with
my acquaintances and friends are special pluses. The beauty of living on
this island and having the opportunity to enjoy so many forms of work,
recreation, and relaxation are also special.
We have a wonderful and warm community that just makes you feel
welcome - certainly one of the reasons to be extremely thankful for living
here. So, enjoy your surroundings and be sure to tell others that this is a
great place to live!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Desiree Watson's exception to the
valet and off-site parking seemed
to be the basis of her vote against
McDonough's request.
Watson cited three requirements
that property owners must meet to use
a separate piece of property for off-site
parking.
First the owner of the property
where the off-site parking is to take
place must grant permission for that
use.
Watson said she had contact with
the First Baptist Church and they said
McDonough could not use their park
ing lot for off-site parking.
Second, the off-site property must
be within 400 ft. of the primary prop
erty. Watson said the Baptist Church
is more than 400 ft. away from Ocean
Lodge.
Third, in giving permission to allow
the off-site parking the owner of the
off-site property must give up develop
ment rights.
In the case of St. Simons Elemen
tary school, Watson said the parking is
on Glynn County right-of-way and the
school cannot give permission to some
one else to use the right-of-way.
"And the county is not going to give
up the development rights on the right-
of-way," said Watson.
AddressingthefactthatMcDonough's
request was to increase the parking to
allow for a public restaurant, Watson
said, "Their (Ocean Lodge) brochure
says they can accommodate 325 guests.
That's a lot of vehicles and I don't think
there is anywhere within 400 feet for
off-site parking for that many cars. The
activities at Ocean Lodge are limited
to the guests of the inn, meaning over
night guests. 325 people is not 15 over
night guest rooms. It is not in the spirit
of what was adopted for this facility."
"If they tell me they are going to
have special events, they need to have
enough parking," said Watson, "and
the two places he said he has parking,
he does not have."
John Dow also questioned the valet
parking.
"Valet parking is not part of our
county ordinance, that's the reason it's
not used to satisfy parking require
ments," said Dow, "If you were to carry
this to the ultimate absurdity, anyone
who doesn't have enough on-site park
ing spaces could get around the zoning
ordinance's parking requirements by
saying they are going to have valet
parking."
After a little more back and forth
between IPC members, Preston Kirk-
endall made the motion to approve
McDonough's request. □
