This season of Advent is a time of
searching our heart for the real reason
for this time of great joy. I have been
thinking that perhaps the financial cri
sis many are now facing can be forcing
us to recognize how really out of control
gift giving has become at this time of
year. We can get so frantic in finding
the right gift for each name on our list
that we don't take time to just listen to
the music - smell the scents of spices -
taste the sweets from the oven - be still
and let God's peace fill our hearts with
love. Less shopping means more time
for feeling the joy of HIS birth.

I close with these words from our
Christmas musical - Christmas Is
Jesus - created by Mike Speck.
Your Presence For Christmas -
words and music by Rebecca J Peck
In the busy Christmas noise - all the
lights, the bells, the toys -1 have found
YOU are the only source of comfort
and joy. When the holiday is through
- and the year is fresh and new - what
will linger are the moments spent just
worshiping you, my Lord.
Lord, I want Your presence for
Christmas. I long to feel your spirit
speaking peace to my heart. Of all the
gifts I may receive, there's only one I
really need, and it's your presence for
Christmas. □
St. Simons residents receive
Bishop Gartland service awards
St. Simons Island residents Camille
Penders and Sue Kilchenstein are the
recipients of a 2008 Bishop Gartland
Service Award from the Catholic Dio
cese of Savannah.
Penders and Kilchenstein are two
of 70 men and women who were hon
ored for the service they provide to
their parishes and their communities
in South Georgia. Savannah Bishop
J. Kevin Boland conferred the awards
during Mass for the Feast of Christ the
King at the Cathedral of St. John the
Baptist in Savannah on November 23.
Named for Francis X. Gartland, the
first Bishop of Savannah, the award
is given for distinguished service to
the Catholic Church in South Georgia.
The award was instituted in 2000 to
coincide with the 150th anniversary of
the Diocese of Savannah.
The gold and blue award pin com
bines elements of Bishop Gartland’s
episcopal coat of arms with elements
from the shield of the Diocese of Savan
nah. His motto, Vincit Veritas, or
“Truth conquers,” is inscribed on the
pin.
Bishop Gartland, bom in Dublin,
Ireland in 1805, was named Bishop of
the newly erected Diocese of Savannah
in July 1850. A tme missionary bishop,
he traveled the expanse of the diocese,
which at that time included all of Geor
gia and part of northern Florida.
When a yellow fever epidemic struck
the city of Savannah, he visited the
sick tirelessly, administering the sac
raments, until he, himself, contracted
the fever and died in 1854. □
