Glynn County conducts historic resources
survey of unincorporated areas
The Glynn County Board of Com
missioners has begun a comprehen
sive historic resources survey of the
unincorporated area of Glynn Coun
ty-
Quatrefoil Consulting of Savannah,
Georgia has been hired to conduct the
survey, which will form the basis for
future preservation planning.
Funded through a grant in the
amount of $18,300 from the Geor
gia DNR Coastal Zone Management
Coastal Incentive Program and
matched in part by Glynn County,
the survey is a planning component
for the Coastal Comprehensive Plan.
The County matched grant funding
for a total of $36,600 of which $30,000
will be used for the survey update.
The remaining $6,600 will be used
toward the Brunswick-Altamaha
Canal project.
A survey of this nature was last
conducted in 1996, however based on
state recommendations it should be
updated every five years. The final
document will give a complete listing
and description of the approximately
800 historic resources in Glynn Coun
ty, including private and public build
ings, parks, canals and cemeteries.
Project Manager Bob Ciucevich of
Quatrefoil Consulting, who conduct
ed the 1996 county survey, will be
responsible for updating the list based
on a field survey. This will require
Ciucevich to personally photograph
and map each historic resource. Dur
ing the field survey each historic
resource that meets the survey crite
ria of being at least 50 years old, his
torically significant and retaining a
qualifying degree of historic integrity
will have a survey form completed.
“The final report will include a sur
vey overview, developmental history
of Glynn County and an architectural
analysis of the survey that will iden
tify the architectural style and type”
said Ciucevich. “We will also iden
tify all properties which are eligible
for the National Register of Historic
Places and make recommendations
for future preservation action.”
Now through March 2009, Ciucev
ich will update the historic resources
list, which includes pre-1960s struc
tures. Working with the County GIS
department, data gathered by laying
GPS points will eventually be avail
able on the County’s GIS website, as
well as the Natural, Archeological
and Historic Resources GIS website.

Fulton commissioner asks GA General Assembly
to put casino gaming to referendum
Fulton County Commissioner
Robb Pitts has corresponded with
every member of the Georgia General
Assembly asking their support in giv
ing Georgia voters the right to con
sider casino gaming as an alternative
revenue stream for the state.
Pitts points to millions of tourist
and convention dollars lost to other
states, including Mississippi, North
Carolina, New Jersey and Nevada.
“Those tax dollars — and jobs — are
needed right here in Georgia,” says
Pitts.
The building of two casinos in
Georgia would create approximately
11,600 jobs and generate over $675
million dollars in revenue.
‘With tax revenues down, we need
to be aggressive in pursuit of every
available opportunity to improve our
tax base,” says Pitts. “The time is right
to let Georgia voters make the choice.
I am confident that we can make this
change during the 2009 session of the
Georgia General Assembly.” □
