Hospice Auxiliary hosts Lunch & Learn

two “Lunch &
Learn: Hospice
101” in March
for over 50 Aux
iliary members
and guests.
Both events
were held at the
Jolly House at
Hospice of the
Golden Isles
(HGI) in Bruns
wick, Georgia.
These casual
luncheons are
held as part
the Auxilia
ry’s mission to
encourage com
munity under
standing of
hospice services in general and the
unique merits of HGI specifically.
The opening speaker was Margie
Dorsey, President of the Board of
HGI, who discussed the challenges
confronting a non-profit hospice in
this economic climate.
Of over 160 hospices in the state
of Georgia, fewer than 20 are non
profit.
Future “Lunch & Learns” on a
variety of topics will be held in the
coming months.
The Auxiliary of Hospice of the
Golden Isles is an independent,
newly formed 501 (c) 3 corporation
whose mission is to promote, sup
port, and advance the Hospice of the
Golden Isles.
Any money raised through the
Auxiliary’s member-driven activities
is dedicated to specific patient or
operational needs of HGI and to
encourage community understand
ing of HGI.

Winners named in Young Georgia
Authors Writing Competition
Eight Glynn County School Sys
tem students were recently named
system-level winners in the Georgia
Department of Education's 2008-09
Young Georgia Authors Writing Com
petition.
The students, with their respective
grade levels and schools, are: Ethan
Volland, kindergarten, Golden Isles
Elementary School; Meredith Hendry,
first grade, St. Simons Elementary
School; Austin Parke, second grade,
Satilla Marsh Elementary School;
Sophie Gordon, third grade, Satilla
Marsh Elementary School; Olivia
Hickson, fourth grade, Satilla Marsh
Elementary School; Mariaelena
Navarro, fifth grade, Golden Isles Ele
mentary School; Jasmine Trinh, sixth
grade, Jane Macon Middle School; and
Justin Thrower, seventh grade, Jane
Macon Middle School.
The students' entries have been for
warded to the Georgia Department of
Education for the district competition.
District-level winners will be entered
into the state competition. Winners in
the state competition will be present
ed to the State Board of Education for
recognition of excellence in language
arts at the State Board meeting in
October 2009.
The purposes of the Young Georgia
Authors' Writing Competition are to
encourage students to develop writing
that represents their best efforts, to
provide a context for schools to support
and celebrate the writing successes of
all students, and to encourage and rec
ognize student achievement in writing
throughout Georgia.
The competition is open to all
kindergarten through 12th-grade
students enrolled in Georgia public
schools. Entries may be short stories,
poetry, essays, journals, personal nar
ratives, reports or any other original
student writing. “I
Three of Us to perform on Jekyll
The Three of Us, a popular musical
group that performs pop and folk-type
cover times from the 60’s and 70’s will
perform Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m.
in Beachside Hall of the Jekyll Island
Convention Center.
Their tight vocals specialize in two
and three part harmonies. The group
features Bill Townsend on harmon
ica, guitar and vocals who has been
performing professionally for over 30
years; Bo Fox on guitar and vocals with
experience playing for over 45 years
and Marie Toler, who joined the group
about a year ago.
Marie has been playing profession
ally for over 15 years and has become
a focal point for the group’s perfor
mances.
