Georgia State Parks propose parking fee adjustments • Public Hearing set for April 6 The Georgia Department of Natu ral Resources (DNR) has proposed adjusting parking fees at state parks. A public hearing is set for April 6 in Atlanta, and public comments will be accepted through April 24. The DNR board will vote on the proposed increase at its next meeting on April 29. Revenue generated from parking fees is used for maintenance and repair projects at Georgia’s 63 state parks and historic sites. State park visitors currently pay $3 per vehicle, while frequent guests can buy an Annual ParkPass for $30. If approved by the DNR board, the daily parking fee will increase to $5 and the annual pass will increase to $50, effective May 20, 2009. New military and group dis counts would be introduced as well. A copy of the proposed change is posted on www.GeorgiaStateParks.org. Richard Royal of Camilla to a seat on the Jekyll Island State Park Author ity (JIA). Royal replaces Tom C. Lewis who has served as an interim board mem ber since October 2008. Rep. Royal retired from the Georgia House of Representatives in January 2009. Royal is a Member at Large and is president and owner of Royal Invest ments, Inc He is a past president of the Camilla Chamber of Com merce and the Camilla Rotary Club and served ten years on the City Council of Camilla. He has received awards including the Georgia Cham ber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achieve ment Award, the Georgia Forest ry Commission’s Legislator of the Year Award, and the Georgia Farm Bureau Commodity Award. Royal earned a bachelor’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Tech nology. He and his wife, Marilyn, have five grown children and nine grandchildren. □ Feb. Revenue Figures Net revenue collections for the month of February 2009 (FY09) totaled $629,448,000 compared to $965,846,000 for February 2008 (FY08), a decrease of $336,398,000 or 34.8%. The internship program is designed to provide students at universities, col leges and technical colleges with prac tical work experience, an opportunity to earn school credit, and a chance to make up to $1,400 this summer. “In the current economic climate, professional workplace experience pro vides a competitive edge to students entering the workforce,” said Commis sioner Thurmond. “Interns will comple ment their academic knowledge with professional work experience. They will work with the staff in career cen ters, vocational rehabilitation offices throughout the state, as well as our central office in downtown Atlanta. Internships with the Georgia Depart ment of Labor have been highly suc cessful in providing students with the tools needed to make them competitive in a challenging job market.” Interns will work 25 hours per week for seven weeks between June 15 and August 14, and will be paid semi monthly. The program is open primar ily to college sophomores, juniors and seniors presently enrolled in a college, university, or technical institute in the state, or a Georgia resident enrolled in a similar school in another state. School credits may be earned, but interns are responsible for making arrangements with their respective institutions to obtain the credit. Interns will be selected on the basis of their interests, areas of expertise that will be enhanced by their work with the labor department, maturity level, and access to one of the department's offices around the state. Whenever possible, the selected interns will be allowed to choose the office where they will work. Applicants must submit an applica tion and a one-page essay answering the following question: Why do you think internships are important? Interns may also be required to complete a job interview conducted by a member of the department's staff.
