4th Annual Shrimp & Grits Festival
“Shrimp & Grits: The Wild Georgia
Shrimp Festival” kicks off Friday, Sep
tember 18.
Set in the Jekyll Island Club Hotel’s
landmark historic district, the popular
festival boasts amateur and profes

"We began the Shrimp and Grits
Festival as a way to showcase Jekyll
Island and Wild Georgia Shrimp. As
more and more restaurants began
serving shrimp and grits, we realized
that we were at the forefront of a grow

a prominent and highly anticipated
signature event,” said Beth Bumsed,
Director of Special Events for Jekyll
Island.
September has been declared ‘Wild
Georgia Shrimp Month” on Jekyll
Island and the neighboring Golden
Isles, and some of the South’s finest
professional and amateur chefs will
be competing for the coveted title of
“Best Shrimp & Grits” recipes in the
country.
Entertainment during the weekend
features favorite local bands including
Straight No Chaser, Smokin’ Section,
OSKAR Rockhammer, Stringrays,
Randall Bramblett Band, and Three

Sudy Leavy to discuss Eugenia Price
On September 15 at 3 p.m. in the
A. W. Jones Heritage Center Sudy
Vance Leavy will offer a unique look at
“Genie’s” life, the life of Eugenia Price.
Eugenia Price was the first to admit

several years ago.
Looking at two of Price’s books,
St. Simons Memoir and At Home on
St. Simons, Leavy will talk about
the friends that just these encoun
ters produced. In the 1960s, Price’s
neighborhood and her friends became
paramount in her life, as well as her
adoption of a new place, a new culture,
and an actual house to call home—The
Dodge.
As part of her talk, Leavy will por
tray Price on the occasion of a very
special day on St. Simons that honored
her talent and her prodigious body of
work. The lecture is free for Coastal
Georgia Historical Society members.
There is a $10 charge at the door for
non-members. For information contact
the Society at (912) 638-4666. □
