BOE recognized for Energy program
Congressman Kingston announces $96,000 grant
for Glynn County Law Enforcement agencies
• Department of Justice grant will provide
for new employees and equipment
Presenting an Environmental
Excellence award to the Glynn Comity
School System last week for their ener
gy management program, Dr. Ford-
ham praised Glynn County's school
system for being a district role model
in energy conservation.
Fordham presented the award to
school system Energy Manager Dave
Raczynski during the Tuesday, Sept. 8
Board of Education meeting.
Fordham said that through the ener
gy program the school system saved
the equivalent of 8.3 million kilowatt
hours, avoided putting 5,390 metric
tons of carbon dioxide into the atmo
sphere and saved more than $745,000
is the result of an immense team effort
of all our nearly 2,000 school system
employees. And since we could never
fit all of them in this room tonight, the
credit for our success goes out to the
following:
- to all 1,100 teachers for following
the guidelines of the program, keeping
classroom doors closed, adjusting ther
mostats correctly and regularly, and
shutting down computers and equip
ment nightly,
- to all 20 of our principals for their
support and for holding their staff
accountable for their support of the
program,

Congressman Jack Kingston (R-
GA/01) announced that the Glynn
County Police Department and the
Brunswick Police Department are
both the recipients of a grant through
the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice
Assistance Grant Program (JAG).
The funding will enable both agen
cies to fund new employees and pur
chase new equipment.
“I applaud Chief Matt Doering and
Chief Edna Johnson for securing this
funding to enhance law enforcement
capabilities in Brunswick and Glynn
County,” Congressman Kingston
said. “New equipment and officers
are crucial in keeping our commu
nities safe and I congratulate both
agencies for making these valuable
additions.”
The amount of the JAG grant
is $96,156. Glynn County will use
their portion of the funding, $18,250,
to cover the salary and benefits of
one Glynn/Camden County Drug
Court Counselor and to purchase
new equipment. New purchases
will include tire deflation devices,
evidence boxes, surveillance cam
eras, speed radars and a body audio
device. The Brunswick Police Depart
ment will use their portion of the
grant to fund the salary of one Gang
Resistance Education and Training
(GREAT) Program officer. The offi
cer will mentor students in avoiding
destructive behaviors and prevent
ing violence while developing a posi
tive bond between law enforcement
and youth in the community.
“We are very glad to receive this
funding to make some needed addi
tions,” said Scott A. Trautz, Assistant
Chief of Police for Glynn County.
“For example, the evidence collection
boxes will help us enhance uniform
patrol enforcement and better pro
cess criminal investigative issues.
The boxes will contain an assortment
of equipment for officers assigned to
certain zones and will enable them to
be better prepared in the preserva
tion and collection of evidence.”
The Edward Byrne Memorial
Justice Assistance Grant Program
allows states and units of local gov
ernments, including tribes, to sup
port a broad range of activities to
prevent and control crime based on
their own state and local needs and
conditions. Grant funds can be used
for state and local initiatives, tech
nical assistance, training, person
nel, equipment, supplies, contractual
support, and information systems for
criminal justice. □

"I am also pleased to announce that all
20 of our schools and programs that
participated last year in our Energy
Conservation Award Program have
now been awarded the Fourth Nine
Weeks Award of the 2008-2009 school

support of our program guidelines and
summer shutdown plans. Congratula

Raczynski stressed that the success
of the program was to due all school
staff.
"Surely I am not the only one here
tonight who believes we all have a
moral and ethical obligation to take
care of our planet, of God’s Green
Earth if you will, and to hopefully leave
it in better condition than it was in
when we inherited it from generations
past," said Raczynski, "As declared by
our own EPA, our success in our energy
conservation program has given us all
an opportunity to cooperatively make
this possible."
