PAGE 6, SEPTEMBER 21, 2009, THE ISLANDER Washington tea party Continued from Page 1 and our Constitution we went to pro tect. Thomas Jefferson said, "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent." We are going to remain silent no more. Toni Clark The Tea Party in Washington, D.C. last weekend was massive... depending on who's telling the story. But I don't think we should continue the argument of 'how many of us were there', no, we need to let our govern ment know WHO was actually there and WHY we were there! Moms, dads, grandparents, children, teenagers, young adults, old adults, liberals, conservatives! People with dis abilities, healthy people. People who had the money to make the trip, people who didn't have the money to make the trip but were driv en to D.C. by others who also shared their food with them so they could be there. White skin, black skin, yellow skin, brown skin. People of all religions, peo ple with no religion. It didn't matter! We came together united for a cause... to challenge big government. To challenge taxes that are too high and out of control spending. Yes, health care needs to be fixed but slow down and do it right! The list is much too long. A peaceful protest, every time we would sing patriotic songs, tears would flow down the cheeks of many. We understood, we came together to help our country, it was very emotional and gratifying. Many new friends were made, tele phone numbers and e-mail addresses were traded. We marched for ourselves, for our families, for those who could not be there, for the troops who died for our country, for those who are still fighting the war. We will continue the cause, if the politicians do not change... we will vote them out in the next election, that is our pledge! There is talk of another Tea Party in D.C. if it happens I'll be there... with more friends. Dan (last name unknown) To add my 2 cents, I was there and will verify every word (you just read). There were people of every age - the largest group was probably the 30-45 age group. So, now they are elderly? according to some in the media. Look at the pictures - you’ll see middle America of all ages. It was NOT a Health Care rally - it was a rally against excessive spending (by both sides) - against big govern ment - against trying to Socialize our nation, We had a central theme of ‘We The People” — We pay your salary and you work for us - and don’t forget that because we won't... and we WILL fire you”. And yes, the Park Police were very friendly to us. Candy (last name unknown) The march in Washington was abso lutely indescribable. I could cry that I am so happy we went. I can't even begin to explain the emotional aspect. Wonderful people as far as you could see. People hugging everyone and say ing "we can do this." Little kids with signs and old people in wheel chairs with signs that said "please help me so they don't put me to sleep". I couldn't even find the Alabama people, although I did run into two from Wetumpka who had driven up. It will be one of the most memorable REAL ESTATE and YOU <ppfw; By Susan Hardwick '^ A , j v j N ( ^ • St. Simons Island ABR, CRS, E-PRO, GRI Service • Commitment • Results WHAT NOT TO DO This time of the year, many homeowners consider making improvements — the weather is getting cooler; home store marketing says prices will never be better for your individual project; and, you know YOU can do it for less! Here are the top home improvement myths. First, any remodel is a good one. Not in every case. Homeowners design a specific area for their personal needs. Not all improvements are created equal. That giant bonus room finished with a complete gym may be perfect for the present owner’s use; but, the next owner may need that space for an office. You also should consider that you may not save money doing your own remodeling. Doing it yourself can sometimes save you money; but know your limits. For example, always use a professional for electrical work; plumbing; heating and air-conditioning installation. Another myth — pools do not always add value. Pools are a big liability and can be a lot of work to maintain in the off-season. Finally, don’t always follow the latest design trends. Neutral colors are you best bet when thinking about selling. Peach walls must go before your house goes on the market; and, who knows, granite counter tops may be the shag carpet of the future. Park Police and Guards were giving us the thumbs up. One whispered to me "I need a new boss." I simply looked at him and said "We're here to work on that". □ Monkey Wrench Continued from Page 5 deliveries must be made between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. and that the delivery trucks must unload on Beaufait's prop erty. The trucks are specifically forbid den to unload on county right-of-way. Planning and Zoning Director York Phillips told the county commission during their Thursday, Sept. 17 meet ing that the building would be designed to take the lot size, topography, location and other unusual factors into consid eration. The PD text called for Beaufait to enter an agreement with Barnes Plan tation homeowners to allow the bike shop to connect to the condominium sewer system. Speaking on behalf of Barnes Plan tation, Jack Overman said that Beau fait was paying for a study to determine if the condominium sewer system could handle the additional waste from the bike shop building. "We can't say, without the study, if we will allow him to do so," said Over man, "but if the study says our system can handle it, then we'll sign an agree ment with him." Overman also said the Beaufait had come to the Barnes Plantation hom eowners first and they had met many times to work things out. "We support this rezoning as is," said Overman. Commission chairman Jerome Clark (Dist. 5) asked about the driveway con figuration how ingress and egress from the property would be handled. Phillips said they had moved the entrance as far to the north as possible to get it away from the traffic light.
