Mental illness
awareness week
Mental Illness Awareness Week
(MIAW), October 4-10, was designated
by Congress a decade ago to promote
public education about mental illnesses
such as major depression, bipolar dis
order, schizophrenia, post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, obses
sive-compulsive, and borderline per
sonality disorders.
About 60 million Americans experi
ence mental health problems in any
given year. Mental illness does not
discriminate. The U.S. Surgeon Gen
eral has stated that stigma is a major
barrier for people seeking help with
mental illness.
“To help reduce stigma, we need
to understand that mental illnesses
are brain disorders. These are medi
cal illnesses that can be treated with
medication and therapy. We need to
encourage people with brain disorders
to get the help they need,” said Carolyn
Tinkham, a member of the National
Aliance on Mental Illness (NAMI),
Golden Isles Chapter. To learn more
about mental illnesses visit www.nami.
org.
If you have a concern, discuss the
symptoms with your doctor. Early
identification of mental illness is often
a key to recovery. Treatment works.
NAMI Golden Isles sponsors two
support groups, one for those with
mental illness and one for family mem
bers. These meet every Thursday at
the Brunswick SE Georgia Health Sys
tem hospital on Parkwood Drive. For
information, call 506-2963. □

Specific hands on care
Enjoy life
"I don't just get an adjustment from Dr. Carlyle, I get an education."
"I had been having pain under
my left shoulder blade off and on
for a year or more. Then I began to
have pain in my right hip when I
walked. I love to walk for exercise but
after walking for about
10 minutes, the pain
would start and I had
to quit."
"I told my doctor
about the hip pain
and was told that it
was probably arthritis.
The doctor prescribed
a medication which I
decided not to take."
"Finally, I decided to see a
chiropractor. It had been more than
20 years since I had seen one. My
boss is a patient of Dr. Carlyle and
recommended him."
"My X-ray showed that my spine
was out of alignment in several
places as well as slight curves in
Claudia Lambright
three places. Neither my shoulders
nor my hips were level. The X-ray also
showed an obvious difference in my
hip placement which explained why
my right hip hurt when I walked."
"Dr. Carlyle uses many tools to
assess a patient's overall condition
and he looks at the patient's level of
health and wellness."
"Dr. Carlyle also gives
his patients exercises to
strengthen the muscles
to help keep the spine
aligned."
"What have I
gotten from Carlyle
chiropractic care? Well,
my spine is in much
better alignment than
it has been my entire
life. I feel great, and I
know that I am getting
healthier."
"But the greatest gift
I received from Dr. Carlyle is an
education in wellness. Dr. Carlyle is
also a certified wellness practitioner
and I learn something every time I
go in for an adjustment. I also use
the natural, organic probiotics and
fish oil supplements that Dr. Carlyle
recommends."
"And the staff
is great. They
are friendly and
helpful and not just
appointment-setters
but educational
assistants.
"Dr. Carlyle
taught me what I can
do to stay healthy
and it is all natural. I
think a person needs
to educate him or
herself and definitely
check out alternative
medicine."
