Split support for
Tree Ordinance
By Matthew J. Permar
After many, many years in
the talking, and then planning
and development stages, a
Glynn Comity Tree Ordinance
is now on its way to the Glynn
Comity Commission for final
approval.
Any change to a Glynn
Comity zoning ordinance first
has to be reviewed by the both
the Mainland Planning Com
mission (MPC) and the Island
Planning Commission.
The commissions each hold
public hearings and then make
separate recommendations to
the county commission, who
also holds a public hearing
before taking a vote for final
approval or denial.
One of the key aspects to
keep in mind about the pro
posed Tree Ordinance is the
name - the St. Simons Tree
Ordinance. The ordinance,
which would be Section 624
of the Comity Zoning Ordi
nance, would apply only to St.
Simons Island and not to the
mainland, even though it was
reviewed by the MPC.
According to Community
Development staff, the pur
pose of Section 624 is to estab
lish regulations to ensure the
preservation of the tree canopy
on St. Simons.
The ordinance applies to
new development or construc-

Change order
needed for
Gateway project
By Pamela Permar
Shierling
The Glynn County Finance
Committee has approved a
$172,673 change order for the
St. Simons Gateway project.
The change order resulted
from engineering drawings
placing a gravity wall and
trench drain along county
right of way which would have
encroached on private prop
erty. The private property
includes fencing, a sign, park
ing lot pavement and light
ing, and landscaping including
mature trees.
County Engineer Jim Brun
er told Finance Committee
members that while he and
his staff caught hundreds of
errors made by the project's
engineering design firm, Reyn
olds, Smith and Hills (Jack
sonville, FI) that they simply
missed this error.
