Summer brings another great season
of Jazz to St. Simons Island
• Season passes available now -
Golden Isles Arts and Humanities
Association (GIAHA) has the ticket
to “cool music for the warm nights.”
Beginning Memorial Day weekend and
lasting throughout the summer, Atlan
tic National Bank presents Jazz in the
Park 2010.
Six evening outdoor concerts will be
held at the St. Simons Island Light
house lawn. A GIAHA production now
in its 21st year, Jazz in the Park brings
the finest musicians from throughout
the Southeast to entertain audienc
es with an eclectic mix of styles and
sounds. Everyone is encouraged to
bring a blanket or lawn chair to relax
on and a picnic supper to enjoy.
Admission to Jazz in the Park, pay
able at the gate the night of each show,
is only $10 for adults. Children ages 6
to 12 are $5 and anyone under 6 gets
in free. Season fans are urged to get
their full pass to all six shows for only
$40. Passes are available for purchase
now on line at goldenislesarts.org or
by calling GIAHA at 912-262-6934. Ah
concerts are from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
The season kicks off May 29, the
Saturday before Memorial Day, with
perennial local favorite Phil Morrison,
appearing this year with his World
Unity Jazz Ensemble, a fresh blend of
East and West that brings a taste of
other lands to America’s unique musi
cal form. This is the only Saturday
show in the series, all others are Sun
day evening concerts.
Sunday, June 13, String-Sessions
- Enjoy some feel-good jazz without the
cliches and overplayed selections from
smooth jazz radio. The First Coast’s
String-Sessions integrates blues and
only $40 for 6 concerts
bossa selections from Jobim to Miles,
from Sergio Mendes to Santana, as
well as familiar standards for tradi
tional jazz aficionados, including music
by Ramsey Lewis, Herbie Hancock, Bill
Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris
and Wes Montgomery.
Sunday, June 27, The Savannah
Stompers Jazz Band - Making a return
engagement after a 2007 Jazz in the
Park appearance that had audiences
snapping their fingers and jumping to
their feet with the sheer energy and joy
of traditional Dixieland Jazz, the Stum
pers perferm early 1900s classic jazz
tunes from New Orleans, St.Luuis and
Chicagu standards, and West Cuast
Revival (1940s) selectiuns with equal
verve and skill.
Sunday, July 25, Silver Lining -
This yuung and incredibly talented
Savannah group was furmed in 2004
with a visiun tu inspire new audiences
and refresh the jazz traditiun. The trie
blends the suunds uf Brazilian jazz,
traditiunal jazz, Latin jazz and blues
with influences from rock, Americana,
swing and cuntempurary jazz, featur
ing the vucals uf Jacksun Evans and
Maggie Evans.

ers uf all tastes and ages will want te
catch the genre-busting vucals uf this
remarkable Atlanta vucalist and her
ensemble. This self-styled “love child of
Muddy Waters and Peggy Lee” brings
a touch of city cabaret to the open-air
venue of Jazz in the Park with a perfor
mance Atlanta’s Creative Loafing has
called “simply breathtaking.”

The Bohemian Gypsies - Reviving and
expanding the romance and gypsy
swing vibe of a hip 1930s Parisian
night club, vocalist Julie Wilde and
her “Bohemian” band display virtuoso
talents and the influence of the unfor
gettable guitarist Django Reinhardt
(marking his centenary in 2010) and
his famous Hot Club de France. The
ensemble’s exotic repertoire ranges
from gypsy jazz and swinging stan
dards to Julie’s original tunes—all
uniquely stylized in a sophisticated,
upbeat and entertaining sound.
A Golden Isles tradition for more
than two decades, Jazz in the Park
takes place by the sea at high tide, for
maximum breezes and bug-free com
