My nest is empty - again! Billy
and Gayle finally got back into their
house this past weekend - after almost
nine months of repair following flood
ing from last September's heavy rains.
The only one not so happy for them
is Gracie - she is going to miss them
something terrible! Billy says she gets
to come for the first sleepover!
We join with Frederica Baptist
Church in extending sympathy to
Brewnell Thaw and family in the death
of her husband Artie. We were friends
for most of our 40+ years on St Simons
and share many special memories -
including many evenings sitting on the
Pier and solving all the world's prob
lems! Congratulations to Whit Chap
man as he celebrates four years on staff
- first as Youth Minister and now as
our greatly loved Pastor. Congratula
tions to Graduates Natalie Shelnutt,
Bryce O'Steen and Caroline Boyd.
Chad Sharp is welcomed as a new
member of St. Simons United Meth
odist Church. Congratulations to
Laura and Richard Sipe on the birth of
their new baby girl Sarah Catherine,
whose proud grandparents are Carole
and John Barton.
St. Simons Presbyterian Church
extends sympathy to Kathleen Kent in
the death of her father Jack McDon
ald. Sympathy is also expressed to
Barbara Wilsher in the death of her
mother Margaret Barnes in Decatur
GA. Summer Schedule for June, July
and August begins with Breakfast at
8:45 in the Social Hall followed by Sun
day School at 9:00, Worship at 10:00
and Lemonade on the Lawn at 11:00.

Golden Isles Presbyterian
Church announces the arrival of their
new pastor, Alexander Brown, his wife
Sara, and their one-year old daughter
Ada. During his undergraduate educa
tion at the University of Dundee, he
took part in a student exchange pro
gram with the University of Oklaho
ma. He graduated from the Theological
College of the Free Church of Scotland
and is currently enrolled in a master’s
program at Covenant Seminary in St.
Louis, MO. He comes to St. Simons
from Independent Presbyterian Church
in Savannah. The public is invited to
attend Rev. Brown’s ordination and
installation service Sunday, June 6 at
6:00 p.m. Golden Isles Presbyterian
Church is located at 48 Hampton Point
Road on St. Simons Island.
Flowers were placed in Pine Ridge
Baptist Church by Clarence and
Pauline Hilburn in celebration of their
Wedding Anniversary on May 28.
Members are invited to the wedding of
Kacey Ray Brooks and Patrick Vaughn
Smith on June 5.
Frank J. Busbey has been called
to serve as Pastoral Counselor on the
staff of Southeast Baptist Association.

sional Counselor.

Arthur Darrell Thaw
Arthur Darrell Thaw went on to
claim his Heavenly reward on May 23,
2010. He passed away peacefully at
Hospice of the Golden Isles. Artie was
a member of Frederica Baptist Church
and First Baptist Church of St. Simons
Island.
Artie was bom September 4,1929, in
Bronx, New York, to his parents, Mor
ris and Minnie Thau, who both came
to this country as children through
Ellis Island as emigrants from Austria.
Artie joined the U. S. Army Air Corps
at the age of 17. In service to his coun
try, Artie came to Albany in his beloved
South Georgia where he met the love
of his life, Grace Brewnell Hendley
in 1949. They were married in 1950.
After service, Artie started a career in
the finance business in Albany, which

continued until his retirement in 1980.
While in Albany, his two sons were
born, of whom he was so proud. He
moved his family to St. Simons Island
in 1963 where he became an active
member of his community. Artie was
a member of the Elks Club and the
Lions Club where he served in various
leadership positions. He was a char
ter member of the Raccoon Club at
Bennie’s Red Barn. After moving to St.
Simons Island, he enjoyed his hobbies
of saltwater fishing and softball with
his friends and family.
After his retirement in 1980, Artie
took on golf as another hobby. He loved
the game of golf with a passion and
enjoyed the friendships and camarade
rie that came as a result of the game.
His golfi ng buddies fondly gave him
the nickname of “Snake” due to his
innate ability to slither up on you and
beat you on the closing holes.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, and a sister, Barbara Atlas of
Tarzana, California.
He is survived by his wife of 60
years, Grace Brewnell (Geech) Thaw;
two sons, Darrell (Debbie) and Tony
(Kim), all of St. Simons Island. He
also leaves behind four grandsons, Jay
Thaw, Taylor Thaw, Dylan Thaw, and
Ryan Thaw. He is also survived by a
sister, Sidele (Marvin) Bushaikin; and
two brothers, Irving (Natalie) Thau and
Steve (Candy) Thau.
Visitation was held on Tuesday,
May 25, at Chapman Funeral Chapel.
A memorial service was be held on
Wednesday, May 26, at First Baptist
Church of St. Simons Island.
Memorial contributions may be
made to Hospice of the Golden Isles or
to Frederica Baptist Church building
fund. Chapman Funeral Chapel is han
dling arrangements. □
