Permar For the second time in about a year, Glynn County Commis sioner Bob Coleman (At Large #2) has questioned an insur ance contract that the County Finance Committee recom mended awarding to McGinty- Gordon Associates. During the Thursday, June 3 board meeting, Coleman asked that the federal flood insurance contract be removed from the 'consent agenda' for discussion purposes. The agenda item gave the commission the option to either renew the insurance, which expires in this month, with the current broker, McGinty-Gor- don, or issue an invitation to bid on the insurance. The recommendation was to renew with McGinty-Gordon. Turn to Page 8 County flood insurance Murphy's gets second license By Matthew J. Permar Murphy's Tavern owner Patrice Amerson was granted a Glynn County alcoholic bev erage license for the bar by the County Commission during their meeting last Thursday, June 3. Normally an alcoholic bev erage license is not a big news story, but in this case, it is the second valid license the com mission has granted for the bar this year. Former owner Randy Pow ell was issued a license by the county earlier this year. The reason Powell has been able to re-open the business, which has been closed since last November, is because he has been unable to get a state alcohol license. Photos by and courtesy of Tara Joos, Program Coordinator, Special Olympics Coastal Georgia Lundell resigns as head of GICA The Golden Isles Career Academy's Board of Directors accepted the resignation of CEO Andy Lundell on Tues day, June 1 to be effective at the end of his current contract on June 30, 2010. Lundell indicated his deci sion was for personal reasons but attributed it greatly to his family residing in Dublin, Georgia. Lundell commuted, returning to Dublin on the weekends. Lundell served for two years as CEO of the new Career Academy and led its successful opening. The Board praised Lundell for his outstanding efforts and leadership in shepherding the successful launch of the Acad emy and positioning it for an even more successful future. The Board, representing the partnership between the Glynn County Board of Education, Altamaha Technical College, and the business community of Glynn County moved imme diately to begin the process of identifying a pool of qualified candidates and hiring, as soon as possible, a new CEO to lead the Career Academy. Dr. Ralph Gomto, Principal of Golden Isles Career Acad emy, will oversee operations during the summer as the interim CEO. □ Special Olympics makes comeback in Glynn and McIntosh counties By Matthew J. Permar Coaching a team for the Special Olympics or volun teering to help with a Special Olympics event is a time con suming, demanding job that must be done for the love of the athletes. Designed to be a sports pro gram that provides physical and social outlets for people with disabilities, Special Olym pics has been an active event in Glynn for 30 years. First run by volunteers with assistance from Glynn Coun ty, the program eventually become a wholly volunteer run program. Over time the volunteer base dwindled to the point where it became too much work to keep the program active on a year round basis.
