New principals named at Altama, Jane Macon
Glynn Comity Schools Superinten
dent Howard Mann has announced the
appointments of Robert E. Owens as
principal of Altama Elementary School
and Michele D. Seals as principal of
Jane Macon Middle School. The Glynn
County Board of Education approved
the appointments, which will be effec
tive July 1, at its June 8 meeting.
Owens, who has 32 years of experi
ence in education, will take over for
Dr. Juliann Rogers, who was recently
promoted to executive director of early
Macon Middle School.
Seals earned a bachelor's degree
in English education from Georgia
Southern University and master's and
specialist degrees from Albany State
College.
"Dr. Spence was my high school
math teacher, so we have a long history
together," Seals said. "I have big shoes
to fill, but I know that the students
and staff here will continue to move
things forward. With our spectacular

Chambliss discusses progress of Glynn’s VA clinic
Touches on oil spill and Arizona immigration law
By Pamela Permar Shierling
Last Monday, June 5, Georgia U.S.
Senator Saxby Chambliss spoke to an
informal gathering of press and busi
ness people at the Brunswick/Golden
Isles Chamber Commerce about the
slow progress of opening a Veterans
Administration Clinic in Glynn Coun
ty-
“No issue is a greater priority than
the VA clinic,” Chambliss said. “We owe
a debt of gratitude to our vets and we
need to make sure
they have health
care for life.”
“There have, how
ever, been gaps in
the progress of the
VA clinic designated
for Glynn County,”
he said. “The pro
cess (of locating a
VA clinic in Glynn)
was begun in 2005
and it has been diffi
cult getting through
the federal govern
ment’s bureaucratic
maze trying to make
it happen.”
“This is a classic
example of federal
bureaucracy taking
move when the choice to put a VA clinic
in Glynn was made,” he said.
Chambliss gave ready credit to Geor
gia Senator Johnny Isakson who serves
on the Veteran’s Committee, Rep. Jack
Kingston (R-l) as well as members of
the local community in the efforts to
make the clinic happen. The pressure
on the feds, he said, was ratcheted up
during the past 12 months. “This clinic

academics and intervention programs,
a district administrative position that
reports to the superintendent.
Owens currently serves as assis
tant principal at Altama Elementary
School, a position he has held since
July 2006. Prior to that, he was a class
room and Early Intervention Program
(EIP) teacher at Glyndale Elementary
School from August 1978 to June 2006.
He was named Teacher of the Year at
Glyndale in 1984 and Glynn County
Teacher of the Year in 2005.
Owens earned an associate degree
from Brunswick Junior College, a
bachelor's degree in elementary educa
tion from the University of Georgia,
and master's and specialist degrees
from Georgia Southern University.
"Having been at Altama for several
years, I have fostered many positive
relationships with students, parents
and staff who trust me to place the
needs of students first and foremost in
all decisions," Owens said. "Dr. Rog
ers has laid a great foundation at this
school and I'm looking forward to the
challenge of carrying on the successful
programs and environment that we
have created here."
Seals, a Brunswick native who
graduated from Glynn Academy, has
10 years of experience in education.
She will replace Dr. Scott Spence, who
was recently named principal at Glynn
Academy.
Seals began her educational career
teaching high school in McIntosh and
Liberty counties before coming to Glynn
County to teach English/Language Arts
at her alma mater from 2002 to 2006.
She was then promoted to her current
position as assistant principal at Jane
Michele D. Seals, principal of
Jane Macon Middle School
to continue to ensure that we provide
a safe and healthy school environment
for our students."
Mann said that he was proud that
both Owens and Seals are products
of the local school system who worked
their way up the ladder to assume lead
ership roles in the school system. "As
with all of our principals and admin
istrators, we have high expectations
for our school leaders. I know that Mr.
Owens and Mrs. Seals are both very
student-focused professionals who will
excel in their new positions." □
