THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT-
Starring: Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska,
Mark Ruffalo, Josh Hutcherson & Yaya Da Costa
Directed by Lisa Cholodenko
Written by Lisa Cholodenko & Stuart Blumberg
Running Time: 1 hour, 44 minutes
Rated R - Sex, profanity & adult themes
This is a terrific film featur
ing Annette Bening and Julianne
Moore at the top of their form.
They were both nominated for
Best Actress in the 1999 Academy
Awards for American Beauty and
The End of the Affair, respectively,
but lost to Hilary Swanks’ Boys
Don’t Cry.
They have never appeared in
the same movie until now.
In this new movie they play
Nic (Bening) and Jules (Moore), a
lesbian couple whose 20-year ‘mar
riage’ is showing signs of strain.
They have two children, Joni
(Mia Wasikowska) and Laser (Josh
Hutcherson).
Josh is sixteen but Joni has just
turned eighteen, is leaving shortly
for college and is going through
the, “I’m an adult now” pre-depar
ture routine with which all par
ents are familiar.
Joni is an ER doctor at the
local hospital and brings home
the bacon. She is the heavy in
the family and bears the brunt of
Joni’s challenges to her mothers’
authority.
Did I mention that Joni and
Laser had the same father?
Yes, Nic and Jules went to a
sperm bank and were impregnated
by sperm from the same donor
many years before. Nic conceived
Joni, and Jules conceived Laser
two years later.
So the kids have only known
their two mothers, but now they
are curious about their father, the
donor.
Now being of age, Joni approach
es the sperm bank and has them
call the donor, Paul (Mark Ruf
falo), to get his permission for a
contact.
Now Paul is a neat guy. He is
an organic gardener and owns and
operates a health food restaurant
which prepares only green, local
produce, and being in California,
he is doing pretty well.
He also does very well with the
ladies and is having an affair with
the exceptionally beautiful, but
much younger, Tanya (Yaya Da
Costa).
The kids immediately like him
and Laser loves his BMW motor

cycle.
Pretty soon the entire family is
having dinner, the boys are playing
basketball, Joni is riding around
on the back of the bike, and Jules
is doing the landscaping for Paul’s
new house.
Everything is getting a little too
cozy.
Paul has never been married,
has never had a family of his own,
and now he sees the opportunity of
a ready-made family.
Of course, this won’t fly with Nic
and serious conflicts lie ahead.
Annette Bening gives an Oscar
winning performance and Julianne
Moore isn’t far behind.
The remarkable Mia Wasikows
ka (Alice in Alice in Wonderland,
Defiance) holds her own against
these veteran actresses and some
how she dominates her scenes.
Although the story is woven
around a lesbian marriage, it could
easily have been about a normal
marriage in which the couple is
struggling to hold their marathon
(as Jules calls their long relation
ship) together in the face of infi
delity and rebellious children.
This is a movie for adults; beau
tifully acted and directed.
By the way, the writer/direc
tor Lisa Cholodenko plucked the
name of the movie from the 1979
rockumentary and the song, The
Kids Are Alright, about the Eng
lish rock group The Who.
This excellent movie has been
released on DVD. My rating is A.
