Darkness Into Light exhibition
An exhibition of phototransforma-
tions, collage, painting and sculpture by
artists Irwin Berman, Anne Goodstein,
Christophe Goodstein, and Jim Jones
will be on display through November
30 in Art Downtown's Gallery 209.
This unique and provocative exhibi
tion is a stunning visual display of art
by four exceptionally talented artists
that reflects the relationship between
darkness and light.
Berman's phototransformations are
individually displayed on metal, plexi-
glas, and on a larger than life light box
measuring 9' by IT. The light box back
lights the transparency Berman cre
ated especially for this show. The piece
is titled "Wrath of Poseidon" and is
derived from a news photo of the after-
math of the Haitian earthquake. Like
most of his images, this work involves
elements of photography, painting with
barium, and XRAY.
Anne Goodstein creates intimate,
often haunting compositions from per
sonal and historical ephemera and
from the treasures of everyday life.
Christophe Goodstein created a
monumental multi-part painting 20'
long and 8' high using primarily black
and white pigment depicting birdlike
forms in repetitive abstraction. Chris-
tophe's work is also currently featured
in solo exhibition,"Inferno", at the Uni
versity of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer
Musem of Art.
Jim Jones is known for his beauti
fully haunting landscapes of the Geor
gia coast. His painting often celebrates
"the inner life of trees" or the solitude
of a beach after a storm. The work
he presents in Darkness Into Light
includes a grouping of small, monochro
matic paintings that suggest "anatomy
under wraps" and a selection of three
dimensional works.
Art Downtown/Gallery 209 is locat
ed at 209 Gloucester Street in Historic
Downtown Brunswick. Gallery hours
are Tuesday through Friday from 11
a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday

GIAHA volunteers needed
GIAHA is in need of volunteers.
Budget cuts have necessitated a reduc
tion of staff, but the work load remains
the same. GIAHA board member, Den
nis Burgess, is taking on the role of
Volunteer Coordinator to help direct
these efforts.
Current volunteers know the gift of
time is a win-win situation. Volunteers
make GIAHA programs and events
possible, meet great people and have
a lot of fun in the process. It’s also the
perfect way to be “in” with the latest in
arts, culture and entertainment in the
Golden Isles.
Volunteer needs include:
Data Entry: All data base informa
tion will be updated dining the next
few weeks. The task is not complicated
but is time consuming. Contact Heath
er Heath at executivedirector@golden-
islesarts.org or call 912-262-6934.
First Friday Exhibit/Receptions: As
“First Friday” in Brunswick grows in
popularity, the First Friday crowds
visiting the Ritz Theater continue to
increase. Board members will provide
refreshments each month but need
help serving wine and punch and meet
ing and greeting. First Friday runs
from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with about 15
minutes at each end for set up and
clean up. To participate and cover an
hour’s session e-mail Dennis Burgess
at volunteer@goldenislesarts.org or call
912-638-2880.
Clean up day at the Ritz: Another
task coming up in the near future is
restricted to those who are energetic,
strong and can go up and down stairs.
The Ritz Theater’s upper floors are
veritable Aladdin’s caves of junk. The
accumulation of years of storage items
needs to be carried down and thrown in
a dumpster. The outside of the theater
is looking great, now it’s time to start
looking at the upstairs inside. To par
ticipate contact Dennis Burgess.
A Christmas Carol: Later in Novem
ber, preparations will begin for the
production of A Christmas Carol.
Assistance with costumes, set design,
construction, and decorating is needed.
Persons with expertise in stage light
ing and no fear of heights are most
welcome.
This is just a small sample of the
volunteer opportunities. To volunteer
call 912-262-6934. □
CASA Jingle Bell Run

Glynn will hold its first annual Jin
gle Bell Run benefitting CASA Glynn
kids.
