marriage in an evening ceremony Sat
urday, October 23, at Wesley Unit
ed Methodist Church on St. Simons

Island.
The Reverend John E. Stephens
officiated at the double ring ceremo
ny.
Nuptial music was provided by
organist Beth Humber, The Ambiance
Trio on cello, flute and violin, and solo
ist Joshua Shelander.
The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Gary Frederick Nichols of
Atlanta, Georgia and was given in
marriage by her father.
Kimberly Milling Whittaker served
as matron of
honor. Brides

Kyle Nichols
McWhirter, Ash
ley Harris Healy,
and Sarah Kath
ryn Smith. Vir
ginia Kee Griffith
was flower girl.
The groom is

The Retreat Club
on St. Simons
Island.
The brides
maids luncheon was held at the
King & Prince Hotel solarium. The
rehearsal dinner, given by the bride's
parents, was held at the Beach Club,
Sea Island.
After a honeymoon trip to Mexico,
the couple will reside in Cartersville,
Georgia. □
Barefoot receives
Historian of the
Year Award
Patricia Cofer Barefoot was present
ed the Guale Historical Society's 2010
Historian of the Year Award at the
Society’s annual banquet on November
11 at Magnolia Manor in St. Marys.
Mrs. Barefoot, who is a native of
Glynn Comity, is a noted Coastal Geor
gia researcher and historian.
She has been a ranger at Hofwyl
Plantation in Glynn County and at Fort
Frederica on St. Simons. She has also
been a Preservation Officer at Coastal
Georgia Regional Development Center.
She is a member of the Guale Historical
Society and on the board of the Bryan-
Lang Historical Archives in Woodbine.
Her writings include three books in
the Images of America series, Bruns
wick, The City By The Sea; St. Marys
and Camden County and Cumberland
Island. Her compilation of news articles
Falling for Coastal Magic is now out of
print.
Guale Historical Society presents
this annual award to historians who
have made major contributions in his
torical research, publications or preser
vation. □

Hofwyl to hold 29th Annual Christmas
on the Old Plantation
Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State
Historic Site will hold the 29th Annu
al “Christmas on the Old Plantation”
event on Friday and Saturday nights,
December 3 and 4, from 6 p.m. until 9
p.m. each night.
A walk through majestic, centuries
old Live Oaks, and along a candlelit
path, will take visitors back in time to
Christmas 1860. The antebellum plan
tation home will be decked out with old
time Christmas finery. There will be
candles, real greenery and handmade
holiday creations.
Costumed interpreters, including
General Robert E. Lee, will greet visi
tors during a candlelight tour of each
room. Traditional Christmas carols
will be sung on the front porch as visi
tors await to enter the house.
Re-enactors from the 26th Georgia
Infantry and other units will portray
a muster of the Glynn Guards and
Brunswick Rifles militia units. There
will be musket drills, tactical demon
strations and portrayal of camp life.
Periodic cannon firings will happen
throughout the night. Nighttime can
non firings are a rare and impressive
event with flames shooting over 100
feet from their barrels.
Santa Claus will seated by the fire
place in the old plantation kitchen to
greet guests. Families may bring a
camera to have their children’s picture
taken with Santa. Hot Wassail and
other Yuletide refreshments will be
available.
Guests will walk through at their
own pace and should plan on spending
an hour to an horn' and a half. Alter
nate transportation will be available
for those who are handicapped. Admis
sion is $6 for adults and $3 for chil
dren. Visitors are encouraged to bring
flashlights and dress appropriately to
the season.

located on US Highway 17, 10 miles
north of Brunswick, 5 miles south of
Darien, and one mile east of Inter

Holiday Arts Show
The Georgia Coastal Artists Guild
(GCA) will hold its annual Holiday Art
Show Saturday, December 4, 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m. at the A.W. Jones Heritage
Center on St. Simons Island.
Many unique works of art, includ
ing still life, historic landmarks, the
Marshes of Glynn, and beaches, will be
presented in a variety of mediums by
the group of over 30 regional artists.
A small number of hand-painted and
crafted Christmas decorations will be
available.
