Book Signing at Hatties
Hattie's Books will host Richard
Jay Hutto signing his latest novel, A
Peculiar Tribe of People: Murder and
Madness in the Heart of Georgia, dur
ing First Friday.
In early 1960, as John F. Ken
nedy campaigned for the presidency,
as Elvis returned from his stint in
the army, Chester Burge—slumlord,
liquor runner, and the black sheep of
the proud and wealthy Dunlap family
of Macon, lay in a hospital bed, recov
ering from surgery. He listened to the
radio as the news reported that his
wife had just been murdered. Chester

the trial finally began, the Southern
town of Macon witnessed a story of
epic proportions; a tale of white-col
umned mansions, an insane asylum,
real people as “Southern grotesque” as
the characters of Flannery O’Connor,
and a volatile mix of taboo interracial
relationships and homosexuality.
Chester Burge was a walking
streak of deception and sex. After
weaseling his way to be the caretaker
of the last Dunlap sister, and forc
ing his way into her will, Burge and
his wife inherited a fortune as well
as one of the family mansions. Then
came his numerous affairs with other
men—including his chauffeur—and,
either single-handedly or with help
from a lover, the murder of his wife.

Hutto, one of the foremost histo
rians of the Gilded Age, compiled
and edited Accepted Fables, the auto
biography of Jordan Massee, and
wrote Entitled: American Women,
Titled Husbands, and the Pursuit of
Excess (with a preface by HI&RH The
Grand Duchess of Tuscany), as well
as Crowning Glory: American Wives
of Princes and Dukes (with a preface
by HRH Prince Michael of Greece and
Denmark), and Their Gilded Cage:
The Jekyll Island Club Members (with
a preface by Stillman Rockefeller).
A former attorney, he served as
White House Appointments Secretary
to the Carter Family and was Chair
man of the Georgia Council for the
Arts. He is an elected member of the
City Council of Macon as well as a
Knight of Malta and a Knight of the
Holy Sepulchre. □
Student art on display for holidays
Golden Isles Arts and Humani
ties Association (GIAHA) will hold
an opening reception for one of its
most popular and imaginative annual
exhibits on First Friday, Dec. 3, from
5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Ritz Theatre
in Downtown Brunswick.
The Annual Glynn County Student
Art Show features hundreds of amaz
ing art pieces in every medium made
by the talented and creative K-12 stu
dents in Glynn County schools.
The exhibit will remain on display
through the end of the month on
Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00
a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. □
New art exhibit at Art Downtown
“Neorealism: New Visions from
Old Snapshots” is an exhibit by Rob
Nixon of deconstructed and manipu
lated found photography opens with a
reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. dur
ing First Friday.
A Downtown Brunswick resident
and the Marketing and Communica
tions Director for GIAHA, Nixon’s
work has been as a writer, a story
teller, mostly in theater and film.
Combining this focus with his long
standing fascination with photogra
phy resulted in the creation of the
pieces in this exhibit. The images are
printed on metal and float from the
wall without frames or glass.
“Neorealism” will be on exhib
it through December 30. Tuesday
through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 5:30
p.m., and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. or by appointment. □
