Smithsonian celebrates Gullah Geechee culture
The McIntosh County Shouters have
been invited to perform at the Kennedy
Center and Library of Congress on
Wednesday and Thursday, December
1 and 2.
The Smithsonian Institution is cel
ebrating the Gullah Geechee culture
with the McIntosh County Shouters
and a special exhibit on Lorenzo Dow
Turner’s groundbreaking studies of the
Gullah language. According to the Ken
nedy Center, “This will be a rare oppor
tunity for people to have the experience
of seeing a comprehensive exhibit on
Dr. Turner's work as well has being
able to see the McIntosh County Shout
ers perform.”
“Of all the groups who applied to
participate in the American Folklife
Series, the McIntosh County Shouters
were at the top of the list,” said Thea
Austen of the Library of Congress.
“The McIntosh County Shouters are
an extraordinary group. They have
performed at the Smithsonian Institu
tion in the past and everyone is looking
forward to their upcoming Washington
DC performances.”
Tony Thomas at the Smithsonian
Institution noted, ‘Washington, D.C.
has a much larger Gullah Geechee pop
ulation than we had realized. The Ana-
costia Museum’s Lorenzo Dow Turner
exhibit has had more visitors in its first
five weeks than it has had for the dura
tion of any other exhibit.”
Dr. Lorenzo Dow Turner was the
first full time African American profes
sor at Roosevelt College in Chicago.
While there, he taught English and
linguistics. He received a Fulbright
scholarship to continue his studies in
linguistics and concentrated on the
Gullah language. His studies took him
to several African countries, the Sea
Islands in South Carolina and Georgia,
and Brazil.
The exhibit, originally scheduled
to close March 27, 2011, has been
extended until July 2011 due to its
popularity.
The Shouters will perform at the
Kennedy Center at 6 p.m. on Wednes
day, December 1 and at the Library
of Congress at 12 p.m. on Thursday,
December 2. Both performances are
free and open to the public.
The McIntosh County Shouters are
recipients of the 2010 Georgia Gover
nor’s Award in the Humanities. This
highly competitive award recognizes
individuals and organizations who are
“doing exemplary work in the humani
ties and encourages them to serve as
models for others across the state.”
We are honored to be recognized by
the Smithsonian Institution for sharing
the legacy that has been passed down
to us,” said Shouter Carletha Sullivan.
“Our ancestors would be very proud.”
The McIntosh County Shouters is a
501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and
relies on the generosity of donors to
allow them to visit schools and teach
this rich culture to students. Dona
tions may be sent to: The McIntosh
County Shouters, 2126 GA HWY 99,
