In the no nonsense style of a
career law enforcement official,
Charles Rinkevich, chairman
of the Glynn County Commis
sion Jail Advisory Committee
(JAC) and former director of
the Federal Law Enforcement
Training Center, hopes to have
his group finish their job and
recommend a location for the
jail expansion to the county by
January.
Meeting for only the second
time last week, Rinkevich told
the committee he would like
them to be prepared to make
their recommendation at their
next meeting, which is sched
uled for Tuesday, December 28
at 10:00 a.m.
The committee is well on
the way to making Rinkev-
ich’s deadline after eliminating
three sites from the nine site
list last week.
Glynn County Community
Development Director David
Hainley presented a list of
nine potential jail sites to the
JAC at the Thursday, Dec. 9
meeting.
The list included for each
site: travel time and mileage
to the courthouse, site acre
age, road networks around the
site, zoning, storm flood surge
data, wetlands, elevation and
utilities.
The committee reviewed
each individual site before
loading into a van and visiting
each site.
During Hainley’s presenta
tion and discussion, the com
mittee eliminated three sites
including, the former Bruns
wick Wood Products creosote
plant site on Perry Lane Rd.,
the seven acre, undeveloped
tract across Perry Lane Rd.
from the old creosote plant and
a 10 acre site off Highway 99
behind Seaboard Construction

Talking about his depart
ment’s recent Excellence in
Youth Sports Award, Glynn
County Recreation Director
Wesley Davis is careful to give
credit where credit is due.
“This isn’t my award or
(Athletic Manager) Steve’s
(Mellinger) award,” Davis told
The Islander last week, ‘We’re
just the guys that got to go to
the award ceremony and have
our picture taken.”
“No,” Davis continued, “this
award belongs to the whole
recreation department staff,
all of whom do an excellent
job working with the youth
of Glynn County and keep
ing our parks in great shape.
This award belongs to all the
Glynn Comity Commissioners
who support us and allow us to
provide these youth programs.
And it belongs to our entire
local community who voted to
approve the Special Purpose
Local Option Sales Taxes that
made facilities like the North
Glynn park possible. I want to
thank them all for supporting
this department and its pro
grams.”
While he included the
entire sitting and immediate
past commissioners, Davis was
especially thankful to Com
missioners Tony Thaw, Don
Hogan and Howard Lynn.
“These three have helped
drive Glynn Comity recreation
to a different level, a higher
level than it has ever been
before,” said Davis.
On December 6, Glynn’s Rec
reation Department received
the National Alliance for Youth
Sports’ (NAYS) Excellence in
Youth Sports Award in San
Diego, California.
Developed by NAYS and
Athletic Business magazine,
the Excellence in Youth Sports
