Newspaper Page Texttheislanderonline.com Published by Permar Publications ssislander@bellsouth.net August 1, 2016 Established in 1972 Vol 51 Issue 50s Sheriff’s Deputies receive recognition By Pamela Permar- Shierling Last Friday, Dec. 8, Glynn County Sheriff Neal Jump presented Deputy Rod Nohilly the Certificate of Commenda tion and Deputy Christopher Hatcher the Medal of Valor both for lifesaving actions. In June Nohilly saved the life of an 11 year old boy who received an accidental gun shot wound. A neighbor came to Nohilly asking for help. The deputy found the boy lying on the floor on his back, bleeding, but breathing and his father holding him. Nohilly applied chest seals to the boy’s front and a ban dage to the exit wound in his back. He worked with the boy for about two minutes until the paramedics arrived. “The boy would not have survived without Deputy No- hilly’s assistance and train ing,” Sheriff Jump said. On December 4 Deputy Hatcher placed his patrol car directly in the path of an on coming speeding vehicle whose driver was fleeing from officers. The suspect crashed into Hatcher’s patrol car at 70 MPH and was stopped as a result of the deputy’s actions saving the lives of countless other drivers on Highway 341 that day. “We are not willing to give up our streets to folks running back and forth,” Sheriff Jmnp said. “Hatcher placed his life at risk by providing a barrier for others from the speeding driver.” Despite being injured Hatcher pursued the suspect on foot who was caught and arrested. Glynn County Commission Chairman Wayne Neal had a very good reason to attend the ceremony. “My son was driving that traffic that day in the area. You saved my son’s life,” Neal said. Topping off the day was the swearing in of a new deputy Sara Demonbrun. Permar Just like St. Simons Island residents voiced strong opposi tion to a Dollar General store adjacent to a neighborhood on Frederica Rd. a couple years ago, residents on Hwy. 82 in rural Glynn also opposed a new Dollar General adjacent to their neighborhood last week. During the Mainland Plan ning Commission (MPC) meeting (Tuesday, Dec. 5), Teramore Development LLC (TDL), who is Dollar General’s developer, submitted a site plan for a new store at 118 Ratcliffe Road off Hwy. 82. Unlike the St. Simons Dol lar General site plan, which was denied by the Island Plan ning Commission, this time the site plan was approved on Turn to Page 2 Dollar General Buc ee’s can finally move forward By Pamela Permar- Shierling Ryan Moore, President and CEO of the Golden Isles De velopment Authority (GIDA) announced last week (Dec. 5) that Buc ee’s has received their 404 wetland permit from the U.S. Corps of Engineers. It took a year and a half to get the permit and includ ed involvement from GIDA, Glynn County, and Rep. Bud dy Carter. “We expect them to move forward quickly now that they have the permit,” Moore said.
