Wh THE BEST 1 “WLA.- io . .»• JH THREE HORSE STORIES. From Ireland, California, and South African Rhodesia. Wh'at is said to have been one of the most surprising feats of horse manship in all Ireland is credited to the late Empress of Austria. After a desperate chase a fox leaped the wall of Maynooth college, where the students were meditatively pacing to . and fro. As the fox scurried across the ground the young clericals were about to take up the chase (themselves when a beautiful woman, superbly mounted, cleared the wall in pursuit of the quarry. It was the Empress. Dr. Walsh, the present Roman Cath olic Archbishop of Dublin, received his unexpected guest with gracious courtesy. The chase had taken her through deep water and her wet, clinging garments suggested the de sirability of a chanjrn Bat there was not a shred of female attire at May nooth College, so the Empress threw over her shoulders an academical gown belonging to Dr. Walsh. In ex change for her wrap the Empress pressed upon the future archbishop a diamond ring, and upon her return to Austria she sent to the college a superb statuette in solid silver, of &t. George and the Dragon, and for Dr. Walsh vestments of silk and gold worked with shamrocks in green silk. Here is a story of a wonderful jump ... o iMirt i.y JOur- nalist: "A California, cowboy was taking steers to Leadville and had camped for the night on Bear River near its junction with the Little Snake. In the middle of the night something occurred to stampede the cattle. The man mounted his bronco and rode hither and thither on the flank of the herd until their fright had died away. Four or five times the rider felt, his horse give tremendous I leaps, and with daybreak he discov- I ered ‘he cause. The cattle had.climb i ed on to a level plateau which is in tersected by a canyon four miles long and from 1,500 to 2,000 feet deep. Its walls incline toward each other at ’ the top, where the distance is fifteen or twenty feet. In riding the man had kept the steers circling about this plateau. A dozen of them, he 1 found, had fallen down the canyon i and been killed. Hoof marks show i ed him that the great jumps made by his horse were occasioned by the animal’s clearing the canyon each lime it. came to the taking-off Gertrude Page, author of v<Ty \fell an her ■!■ 'ax* iia au-i:'- ootSind ' ' "fl cig: .« big as that in v got on a tramcar going east, i just as they alighted at the .minus a long circular piece of iron t<n a lorry drawn by twelve horses came up the street. The American, in surprise, asked what that was for. The boy, remembering what the Yan kee had said about the cigars, and with a resolve to be even with him, replied: "Oh, a new hotel has just been built in the Trongate, and that is the i kitchen poker.”—Tit-Bits. Gibraltar has 70 miles of tunnels. Echo of an Old Shot. The echo of a shot fired in the mid dle of the eighteenth century was heard in the Paris law courts a few days ago. One day in 1757 the Dau phin son of Louis XV., while out shooting, announced his intention of blowing off the end of a courtier’s mustache. The man knelt, and the Dauphin fired over his shoulder. At that moment M. de Chambers appear nnd received the whole Os the charge, dying immediately. A perpet ual pension of 6,000 francs was grant ed, and was one of the three not abol ished at the Revolution. The pension of late years has been divided between two direct descendants, and when one of- them died the Treasury refused to pay his share to the survivor. The latter brought an action against the Treasury and judgement was given in his favor. —London Globe. < BABY IN TERRIBLE STATE. Awful Humor Eating Away Face — Body a Mass of Sores —Cuticura Cures in Two Week®. “My little daughter broke out all over her body with a humor, and we used every thing recommended, but without results. I called in three doctors, but she continued to grow worse. Her body was a mass of sores, and her little face was being eaten away. Her ears looked as if they would drop off. Neighbors advised me to get Cuticura Soap and Ointment, end before I had used half of the cake of Soap and box of Ointment the had all healed, and my little one’s face and body were as clear as a new-born babe’s. I would not be without it again if. it cost five dollars, instead of seventy live cents. Mrs. George J. Steese, 701 Co burn St., Akron, Ohio, Aug. 30. 1905.” NOT A PRINCE OF FINANCE. „ “That man is positively dishonest!” said the protesting citizen. “No,” answered Senator Sorghum. “He isn’t as culpable as you think.
