HOW TO MAKE MONEY.
The farmer’s wife has a wide field
to work in for making spending
'money, and a little extra to help
knake both ends meet, writes Mrs.
XV. C. Palmer, in the Farmer.
Do not be discouraged if things
do not come your way at first.
Take heart again; bo determin
ed you will succeed and you will
in time, if you keep at it constant
ly never giving uy.
The first and most important -
thing to do is to work up a good ■
reputation for whatever you have 1
to sell, by selling only the very '
. Lest quality.
After this has been aecomplish
fbt rest of the way is comparative
ly <oasy.
Iff you start out with butter and
the best plan is to get regular cus
tomers.
Try to please them by making
the butter to suit their taste; be
sure it is good and fresh, the eggs
strictly fresh.
Then there is no need of any mt
accepting low prices for butter
ami eggs.
If they make good butter and
sell strictly fresh eggs, they will
command 25 cents per pound and
at least 18 to 20 cents per dozen
the year round for their butter
ai»d eggs.

*l4le for all you can spare among
your customers.
Be sure to always trim and wash
the vegetables so they will prove
tempting to the taste as well as the
eye.
There is always a good market
for berries, and it would pay to
have an extra supply, so as to en
able one to sell a liberal amount of
fruit each year. When canning
fruit put up a few extra cans. These
always sell at a good price.
The same is true with jel'y. It
will sell at ten ecu’s per glass, the
glass to be returned wh. n empty.
In the spring when setting hens,
plan to set a few extie ones. When
the chicks are old enough to fry
they can be easily sold at 25 cents
per ponnd, dressed, to private cus
tomers.
Often in raising spring chickens
the cholera sets in. The following
has never been known to fail, if
taken in time: Five drops of laud
anum, one large pinch of salts,
jnake into a pill with flour. Put
down the chicken's throat.
Then there is the cottage cheese
and fresh butter milk that will find
ready sale among the customers.
Drying sweet corn has proven
very’ satisfactory. Just try making
a business of drying corn for five
or six daySr and you will be sur
prised at how manv quarts you
have. It sells from 20 to 25 cents
pei quart.
Then one can.make pickpls etc.,
to sell.
If one has a.room or two that can
be spared, rent them during the
summer months to nice people that
are seeking a quiet restful place
Gften they are more than will
ing to care for their own room, and

The writer has tried all the plans
she has suggested, and found that
they brought in many dollars.
It took lots of time, patience and

May this help, cheer and en

if it does, the writer will feel fully

AIF’T IT THE TRUTH?
Said a well known business man
to ns the other day: “It would
j not hurt you to occasionally men
| tion our business in the paper. It
■ would help to fill up, you know.”
Yes, we might do it. We
haven’t the least idea on earth
that it would hurt us, and it would
as he suggests help to fill up. vVe
might do all this, but at the same
time, thank God, we do not have to
do it unless we feel like it.
It would not hurt him, either, to
come around and say; “Give me
a column ora half column ora half
column of space for an advertise
ment, and here is the money for
it.”
By doing this he would become
a deserter to that grand army of
dead heads who expect the news
papers to continually- note the im-
■ provements they make, by giving
them free puffs, and for which
they never pay a cent,
It is high time for all classes to
learn that a newspaper is a busi
ness enterprise the same as a dry
goods store or a grocery, run for a
living for its owner! —Fitzgerald

THE WON DR JUS EU
CALYPTUS.
Clifford Piiicbot, the national for
ester, has set the people of South
ern California to thinking about
the eucalyptus tree, and it is an ab
sorbing subject for all of us who
realize the tremendous problem of
reforesting this country.
In arid and semi-tropic Califor-i
nia it appears that certain profits |
nastry forestry’ to practically- one
proposition—the planting of eu
calyptus trees.
Tiie reason far thisisplain. The
ru-ive -rffid
make an amazing growth with a
minimum of rain or other moisture
and when grown the eucalyptus be
comes amazingly- valuable for tim
ber. These being the conditions
ease and rapidity- of production -
it follows, of course, that the for
est idea in California is centered
on eucalyptus.
The profits, as figured, on eu
calyptus culture are certainLC and
cheerfully amazing. The rule, it
appears, is to plant the trees eight
feet apart. An acre of ground be
-209 ieet square, will, therefore,
hold twenty-six rows of trees with
twenty six trees in a row, or a to
tal of 676 trees. A correspondent
says:
‘‘There are trees near Bakersfield
thirtA yeais old, which would
bring $250 each on the stump for
Hie lumber they contain.” At this
rate one acre of eucalyptus trees
would be w'orth thirty years after |
I
planting, just §169,000. Ono hun
dred and sixtv-niue thousand dol-
i
lars in thirty years! A growth of
§5,633.43 per year! And from on
ly one acre.
Given the land, find some extra
help at planting time, and one man
and a team can care for 100 acres
of growing eucalyptus trees. At the j
above rate—taking the figures as i
they are furnished-tire 100 acres in ,
thirty years would have a value of !
§16,900,000! —Milwaukee Journal.

THE OLIVE OIL CURE.
As now practiced by many fash
ionable wemen, and not a few men,
the olive oil cure haS more to re
commend t than most of the po
pular fads ?f society. As long
ago as the <iays of luxurious Ro-'
j mans it was a favoritetaxiom that;
a iong and peasant life depended j
on two fluiis—wine within and
olive oil without. ’The man of to
day has ch itged this prescription
somewhat aid uses olive oil within
and without.)
A teaspocaful of olive oil taken
three times a day before meals is
the proper dose in connection with
a daily uLover massage. The
tissue-building properties of the I
; oil are wonderful. It makes the
flesh soft a.tl satiny, arcuses a
torpid liver, and thus helps the
complexion. Those who use it
need never fear rheumatism.
Treatment is recommended in |
nervous tromfles and in neuralgia
and neuritis. ’
