BAKER COUNTV HAS
NIGHT RIDERS.
Warrants are Sworn out for Arrest
of Two Prominent Miiier
County White Men.
A special from Newton to the
Herald says; Near Couch's Miil
list week, Might Riders visited the
plantation of Couch Mathis aid
took an old negro man and Ids wife
and their son’s wife, whipped the
women severely and put a rope
aroHnd the old negro man’s neck.
They attempted to swing him up
to a limb of a tree, but the old ne-
gro managed to make bis escape
and went to the home of Andrew
Mrore for protecti )n.
It seems that the oid negro
couple h d a sou in the chain gang!
iu Miller Co., who made his escape,
and the Night Riders came over in-!
to Baker Co. looking for the con. j
vict and charged his family with
hiding him out.
Mr. Mathis went before Judge
W. N. S pence, at Camilla, and se- j
cured three warrants- each for
Frank Adams and deputy sheriff
Rad nay, of Miller Co., charging
them with the crime. Mr. Mathis
6ays that he has postive proof that
these parties are the ones that
committed tne crime
Jjdga Spence directed that the
sheriff arrest these parties and
place them in jail and have t'>-
well guarded until the gra;'
here next Monday, j
lor county to arrest xYdams and
Kadnej. - They' are prominent
people in Ivlillor county.
Defendants Released on Bond.
Deputy Sheriff Radney and
Frank Adams, both of Miller Co.,
were arrested yesterday by Sheriff
R. n. Perry, of Baker Co., on the
warrants sworn out Saturday before
Judge W. N. Spence, at Camilla,
charging them with maltreating an
old nrgro in this county several
nigh s ago nnc! badly beating his
wib l aud daughter-in-law,
Radneyand Adams were brought
to Newton, mul their bonds were
fixed at $3,000 each. These were
prouitly furnished, and both par
ties were released.
Radue- and Adams stated that
they were innocent of any' crime.
The former, an officer of the law,
states that ho went to the home of
the old negro who has made the
complaint, looking for his sm:.
who bad escaped from the Mill i
county chain gmig. The old man
gave Radnev and Adams somoim
pudence, and even went to the ex
tent of attacking them, they assert,
whereupon they handled him some
what roughly. They deny that
there was anything more to the
case, or tnat any attempt was made
to lynch the old man. They further
assert that they were the only two
perso-8 in the “night rider” party
—Albany Herald.
The reporter made a mistake in
file article nbove, in stating that
Mr. Hadney was deputy sheriff.
Mr. Adams was the deputy and
Mr. Radney, who is one of the
proprietors of a livery stable here,
took Mr. Adams to Baker.
The editress heard NK Adams
speaking of the affair, and he says
when the grand jury makes an in
vestigation, he does not thins that
a bill will be found. He thinks
that eveidence will be produced
proving that ha and Mr. Radney
were justifiable in doing ns they
slid. ,
Mr. dim Bush, of Coiquitt, has
