Busy For Brown
Albany Herald:
Some of the J. 3, Brown apolo
gists have advanced a unique ar
gument in explanation of the fight
on the present head of the Brown
machine and, incidentally, of the
State department of agriculture. It
is that “the bond crowd” failed to
get control of the state machinery
through the governor’s office, and
immediately began plotting to ac
complish that end through the de
' partment of agriculture.
I Such an argument presupposes
one of two things-first, that the de
partment of agriculture does “con
trol the state machinery,” or, sec
ond, that thedepartment of agricul
tur can be made an agency of such
control.
Both ideas are equally foolish. J.

J. Brown doesn’t control the whole
statfrgovernment, though doubtless
he’d be glad to do so if he could
What he does control is his polit
ically-built and manipulated de
partment of agriculture, which has
an appointee under one or more of
its branches in practically every
community in the state. AND ALL
OFTHEM AKE WORKING FOR
BROWN-defending Brown, boost
ing Brown, praising Brown, telling
what a maligned patriot Brown is,
and how the state’d be lost without
Brown at the head of the depart
ment of agriculture. It matters not
that the employes of the depart
ment are servants of Georgia-in
this campaign, as in every other in
which Brown has bad opposition,
they must get out and hustle for
votes for Brown.
Under the rule of J. J. Brown,
the department of agriculture isn’t
rendering to the farming interests
of the state that service for which
the public pays. As election t‘me
approaches, there’s a sudden fever
ish interest in “doing something
for the poor farmer,” but up to a
few weeks ago Mr. Brown was giv
ing the department precious little
of his personal attention.
The department is being shame
fully manipulated in the interest of
a self-seeking politician, and if the
voters of the state don't make a
change when they go to the polls,
they’ll richly deserve what’ll be
coming to them for another two
years.

Tula heroic statue of the commander-ta-chlef of the first armies of the
United States was made for the city of Portland, Oregon, though not yet deliv
ered there by the artist. The western municipality has loaned it to the
Seaqui-Centennial International Exposition, opening in Philadelphia June 1
and continuing until December 1, to celebrate 150 years of American Independ
ence. At the foot of the sculpture is shown Pompeo Coppini, the sculptor.
Dr. Henry Waldo Poe, of Portland, declares the face to be the most correct:
likeness ot Washington ever modeled.
