‘For pitchers there . were. many i^
college circles the past season.- Id
view of the fact that there "were so
many good hurlera we have turned
aside from the old policy of choosing
three hurlers and have chosen four,
which, together with a utility. man,
makes our selection total thirteei
nr.en instead of the customary twelve
Several pitchers began the season In a
rush and met with wonderful success
only to fall off and get constantly
trimmed on several occasions - since,
We have reference in this particular
to Pafttone of Georgia and Turk of
Oglethorpe. Both hurled with-much
effectiveness in the early part of the
season, hut they ’have been hit harJ
end have-.lost almost as consistently
in the last two flr three weeks as they
were consistent in winning the early
pert of the campaign. We have there
fora left both men off our selection.
The men we have chosen are:
Charley Ollinger and George Johnston
of Auburn; “Tige” Stone of Mercer;
and “Sunshine” Thompson of Georgij
Tech. Of the quartet, we place Ollln
ger above them all. This man pitched
a great percentage of all of Auburn *«
hardest games and when the - season
had closed he had a clear record be
hind him of nine straight victories.
Ollinger will soon join the Richiyoa'l
club, in the Virginia League. John
ston, who captained the Auburn Tigers
the past season, also had" another
great season, and to entttled to a place
on the All-Southern. He was bumped
upon oue occasion, the Tech Yellow
jackets, but his work after that game
more than made up for the defeat
This season was the last for both
Johnson and -Ollinger at Auburn.
Johnston will soon Join the Detroit
Tigers. “Sunshine" Thompson of
Tech, was a new man in the S. I. A.
A. this season but toe spent a wonder
ful year on the diamond. As this is
being written, not a game has. been
marked down in the tost column for
the Tech righthander. True he hat
not twirled many hard games for Tech
Collins and O’Leary drawing the big
gest games with the toughest opposi
tion but ThomDson’s record entitles
him to a berth on the team.,
“Tifle” Stone' Had Good Year.
“'1 igte" Stone, of Mercer, haq hurled
a great brand of ball, this season. It
was his second, in the S. I. A. A. and
he was handicapped with an inexper
ienced catcher.' Stokes Mercer’s re
reiver, was terribly awkward and un
seasoned when he began catching for
the Baptists this season.
Stokes’ improvement has been one
of the encouraging things about th*i
Mercer team and with Stokes' con
stant improvement. Stone and Sawin
have become more and more effec’ive
Stone’s work in his last five games
has been phenomenal. He twirled a

“Tige’s" work against Georgia on
Friday is now history, the Bulldogs
getting but three hits off the little
Baptist captain and two of these were
nfleld scratches. In other words, in
five games. Stone has been nicked for
a- total of twenty three hits, or less
tan.. This was
Sawln’s.first year at Mercer and he
hurled in wonderful fashion. He bids
fair to make Mercer an excellent
moundesman next year.
