FIRST MEETING OF
ABSENCE COMMITTEE
r ‘ On Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock
the absence committee met in Dean
Farrar’s office for the first time this,
year. They hauled the errisg mem
bers of the student body over the
coals for a few minutes and then par
doned most of those who could show
proper excuses for their absences
Several unfortunates, however, who
were without' excuses were either
dropped from the class they had cut
or put on probation.
Prof. Jacob says that this year the
committee will not .be as lenient as
they were last year. Last year a
student could run up a bunch of ab
sences big enough to “ship” him and
then turn in enough excuses to place
him out of danger of being dropped
frotn his class. This year a student
must not only have an excuse, but he
must turn it into Prof. Jacob the day
after he is absent.
The absence committee this year is
composed of Professors Jacob,' Mc-
(iinty and Holder. ' Prof. Jacob s$id
"If you have any friends who have
ubsences, tell them to be sure to turn
in' (heir excuse, or. they will probably
be dropped from their class.”
A student'is allowed a week 'of ab
senccs, . i. e., he is allowed five ab
sences in a five-hour course, three in
a three-hour course or two in a two
hour course. This is approximately
ten per cent, of the classes for a
term. If he has over this number, he
loses credit, even if/he excuses all of
them. An excuse vyill not be accepted
unless it is turned in on the day after
the absence.
The absence committee realize that
the students do .not as yet fully ap
preciate the seriousness of unexcused
absences and are therefore inclined
to be lenient this time, but from now
on they say the rules will be rigidly
enforced.
MERCER FACES “CRUCIAL
TEST” AGAINST FURMAN
’’ Of chief interest to Macon fandom
is the battle this week that Mercer
will be forced to wage against the
celebrated “Purple Hurridan” of Fur
man University, tutored by. "Billy”
Laval with “Speedy” Speer as his as
sist* rit. This contest is going to mean
much to Mercer. As far as the dope
goes, Mercer is slated to come out on
the short end of the horn, but as dope
upsets are becoming general it may
he that Macon and Mercer supporters'
are in for a surprise. Beating Fur
man is going to be a task that meads
' as much to. the local collegians as the
• victory of Centre’s Colonels did to
the Kentucky outfit. ■ *
The Furman game is going to be
fought out in Greenvile, the home lot
of the South Carolinians and a great
deal lies in this fact. Coach Laval
has produced an- eleven at the Bap
tist school in the past two years .that
is a credit to the institution and one
that has suddenly taken a top rank
umong the best teams in Dixie. .
The game will be the sixth of the
. season for the locals, who have lost
three gabies and won two thus far.
The Orange and Black athletics will
. buckle down to real business this
week and endeavor by trimming
Furman to even the score for .the
season. Go to it, Mercer!—Macon

The Fort Valley volleyball team
defeated the volleyball team of the
Mercer Ministerial Association by
taking two out of the three games
of the series played in the Mercer
gymnasium.
The fast playing of Grubbs for the
visitors was largely responsible for
their success. Welch, who played the
net for the “Preacher” team, did the
best work. •
The Mercer team took the first
game almost doubling the visitors and
it seemed that they would easily win
the series but the Fort .Valley team
tightened down and won the last two
games, This leaves the comparative
strength of the two team* undeter
mined, for i week ago the Ministers
took a contest from the Peachtown
volleyballers in Fort VaUey. ft .to
understood that another game will, be
1 arranged ao that the championship
may be determined. ,
