Can you imagine Prof. “Bo” Railey
as All-Southern pitcher .and short
stop ? He played for Louisiana Col
lege for several years, and baseball
is still his hobby. Any time Mercer
plays a game at home, you will find
the professor of sociology and eco
nomics right ther^ rooting as. big as
the next one.
Prof. J. L. Railey was born and;
reared in the northern part of Louis- .
iana, near Summerfield. His father j _
moved to Pristin, La., when the boy,j:
was about a year old, and is still liv-'
ing^here. There were three boys and ! ; i
fivd^girls in the. family-. . Iff!
“I earned my. first dollar in the
cotton patch, where, I picked a bale of
short epttoh and sold it for 9 V cents
a pound,”. s*.l Prof. Railey. with a
smile as lie recalled his boyhood days. '■£
‘And 1 never had a nickname until T
came to Mercer, although 1 don’t
know why it was. * . . • (
"I got my education. by. preaching'
my way through college. After going
to Louisiana College a year, I. hail to
stay out a while, hut I went bark and
finished there. Then'J attended Bay-i
lor University, for one year, getting
my A. B. degree, and later wept to'
Brown University where F received
my master’s degree,” said Professor 1
Railey in summing up his college |
career. “I took a lot of interest in
literary work and once won a'medal
in oratory.” . ••; I
Professor Railey has been in Geor- |
gia and at Mercer since September,
1918,. and he says that the longer he
stay? here, the better he likes it. One
of. his chief delights is to go out to
an association and meet some of the
leading Baptists of the State. ■ Right
recently he has visited a number of
associations in the interest .of Mercer,
and we hope that-he will visit many
more.

Education Week was observed, at
Mercer by two meetings last week in
connection with the educational' pro
gram of the. nation. Wesleyan girls
came over to Mercer -Tuesday night
and gave an interesting program in
connection with Education Week. At
hapel Thursday - morning the mem
bers of the Mercer Education . Club
had charge of the exercises. L. M.
Lewis, president, presided. Roger P.
Cuff, one of the 118 ministerial stu
dents at Mercer, made an interesting
talk on education, basing bis remarks
the annual report of the State
superintendent of schools for Georgia.
Among other things brought out in
the. remarks were that whereas only
$60,000,000 was spent last year for
education in, the United States, $760,-
000,000 was spent for cosmetics;
3800.000,000 for cigarettes and other
luxuries in proportion. '
The entire membership of the Edu
cation Club was seated on the stage,
together with Dean Peyton Jacob,
dean of the education school of Mer
cer University. '

BACHELOR DIALOGUE
The future’s all before you,
- • Look ahead; ’
Let the past’s mistakes not bore you,
Look ahead ; ' •
Turn not backward eyes regretting;
Over what is done, vain fretting,
But your glance straightforward
setting,
Look ahead.
Sad but time, these two professor
-bachelors met in the journalism of-
'■ fice on a memorable day, in a unique
manner and before several members
pt the journalism class. Of course
.this bit of information could not go
unreported; so here goes the con
versatioh:
Prof.,Railey; “Prof; Sparks, I was
in Savannah yesterday
Prof. Sparks: “Say you were."
Prof. Rislley: “Yes,, and I met
young lady who claims that you are
showing partiality."
Prof. Sparks:’ “Oh,.yea, Mist —,
from Atlanta."
Prof.- Railey: “No, Mist —."
‘Prof. Sparks, with a jealous look
Life’s of obstacles a jumble,
..Lookahead;
On which every step may stumble,
Look ahead; -.
Tis a path you can't go blindly,
With good luck to treat you kindly;
Slips must always in your mind be,
Look ahead.
There’s no time for retrospection,
Lookahead;
If, you do, fate makes detection,
'Lookahead; i
When you’ve gained at what you’re
aiming,
Further progress keep dt framing,
Make the future your own naming—
Look ahead!
